Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Has $600M Opening Weekend

Activision announces the recent launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has raked in over $600 million in revenue in just three days. They call this the top-selling new premium release of the year, the biggest-selling digital opening in Activision history, and the biggest-ever Call of Duty launch for PC. They also note this once again compares favorably to a Hollywood blockbuster, saying the military shooter sequel's take outstripped the box office take of the number one movie of the moment:
Activision’s Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® had more than $600 million in sell-through worldwide in its first three days of release. The title has sold more units in its first three days than any other Call of Duty® game sold in its first three days in this console generation, and is the top-selling new premium game release of 2019. Modern Warfare also established a new record as the #1 top-selling digital opening in Activision history. With its blockbuster launch, in its first three days of release, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare more than doubled the box office opening of Joker.

Modern Warfare set new records on the PlayStation Network for the highest digital pre-orders and highest three-day digital sales ever on PlayStation 4. Modern Warfare also has become the #1 top-selling Call of Duty PC launch ever, as opening weekend PC sales on Blizzard Battle.net® were significantly up over last year.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare more than doubled the box office opening of Joker.

"What we don't mention is that CoD costs five to eight times as much as a Joker ticket does, so really, a lot more people went to see the Joker than bought CoD. But that doesn't jibe with this alternate reality we're trying to paint that makes our Chinese investor overlords happy."

Despite mixed reviews and security concerns, Joker made a record-breaking $93.5 million in its opening weekend in the U.S.,Its global gross was $234 million

600mm > 234mm. Not exactly sure what you're going on about.

Why do these games continue to sell so well? People really seem to enjoy playing basically the same game with a fresh coat of paint year after year don't they?

If the game had a lower TTK and a Rush mode, it's all we'd play.

They finally made a larger-scaled game, but it still plays like CoD arcade console boy bullshit shooter.. so camp, CAMP CAMP!

What percentage of video game revenue do you think comes from that group?

I'd say a solid 80%. If you up it to 40, 90%+. For some reason, older people seem to still think everything should cater to them, despite them no longer being a profitable group to cater to.

It's trending down, at least. It used to be that they didn't have to come up with a bunch of specific accolades to give themselves, the new game each year would simply outsell everything that came before. Now it's the biggest COD release on PC (always the smallest market for these since the original MW), biggest digital release overall, biggest first three days this console generation, biggest release among teenagers that stole mom's credit card to pay for it, etc.

I confess, I purchased this title (on PC). I haven't purchased a Call of Duty since Modern Warfare (original), and that's one of the reasons I bought this. I also wanted a fulfilling single player game that I could get through in a weekend and wasn't going to take 40+ hours which I just don't have at the moment (I'm sorry Outer Worlds, you look great though).

Modern Warfare (original) single player was fantastic (imho). Interesting story and characters, so when this came out - and it wasn't a remaster-of-the-remaster, I thought I'd get it.

While the game is well produced, it falls far short of its spiritual predecessor. I got through the entire campaign on Veteran difficulty in ~6 hours. The story was lacklustre and the only character I can recall is Captain Price and that's mainly because he was in the original 'Modern Warfare'.

The story is just bad with a terrible ending that involves (*spoiler*): the death of one of your squad for absolutely no reason. You've cleared the entire facility of bad guys and yet he announces over the com in the ending cut-scene he's not going to make it ... not only does it make no sense - the logical equivalent of deliberately sacrificing yourself to demolish a derelict building - no one on your team bats an eyelid, it's also too short and the missions are uninteresting.

Compared to the heart thumping tempo of the original this is a poor imitation and a good reason Activision won't be seeing any further purchases of the series from me.
