Star Citizen Free Fly Weekend

The Roberts Space Industries Website announces the latest free fly weekend is underway for Star Citizen (thanks DSOGaming). Here's word on the latest chance to sample this space game first announced a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away:
Star Citizen is a massive multiplayer space sim that puts you at the center of a limitless universe full of breathless adventure and harrowing encounters.

Experience the white-knuckle thrill of space combat, discover the majesty of alien worlds, interact with fascinating characters, and build a life in the year 2949.

To begin your adventure, you would normally pledge for one of our starter packages, which gets you a user-friendly ship and game access. For a limited time however, we're giving prospective Citizens the chance to explore the universe and test out some of the most popular ships for free.

So, what are you waiting for, rookie? Jump into the cockpit, fire it up, and start exploring.

Don't care anymore.
Also, no big news. It's just another desperate cry for help to sell virtual ships.

You're definitely correct that things are taking long for what we know is going on, the question is really what is going on that we don't know about. It's obvious at this point that there has been waste and spinning wheels for critical tech and other pieces that required re-work, but to say they haven't released anything is definitely not accurate at all. Even as a tech demo at this point, they've achieved technically what no other company has ever done. Believe me, I get what you're saying and I understand, but read about the actual technical accomplishments of the team and tell me you honestly think they've done no work. Look at the latest article on Server-Side Object Container Streaming. It's actually pretty crazy what they've been doing for the engine on the backend.

I did say little to no work, but fair enough; however, let's look at it this way: Without spending five hours figuring out the true number, let's say they've been working at it for 7 years x 500 people, and we'll take off 500 years to make up for the fact they didn't have 500 people at the start. That's THREE THOUSAND MAN YEARS of work they've put into this thing, and they have what can generously be called a nice-looking tech demo.

So sure, I'm sure that some guys, the ones that work on the engine and are trying to do something that's never been done before are doing great work. The people who are supposed to be building those one hundred full systems for the PU are most definitely doing fuck-all.

(I've worked in a series of embassies over my career, and would talk with all these people, and learned very quickly that in an embassy, 10% of people do 98% of the work. That's the 10% that's all new. The old guard literally does nothing and will readily admit they do nothing.

Seems a very apt comparison. Star Citizen Embassy.)

Yeah, that was my joke.

I'm kind of on the fence if I am defending this game or not. The deal with SC is as they make game systems and tech for Squadron 42, they are also trowing it into this SC persistent universe. They have said repeatedly that SC is not their focus at the moment, SQ42 always being their main goal.

SC "should" be seen as a bonus. Something to play while waiting for SQ42. It's become more than that since they have not released much info, or demos, of SQ42, though.

Which would be nice if they were selling an engine... Alas they're selling a game and after 7 years and a quarter billion $ there's no game.

Mind you, if the rumors about another 5 years before getting into beta are true

Here's the thing, they somehow keep getting 2+ million dollars each month for essentially doing very little to no work. I mean, supposedly they have 500 people working there, what they've got to show for 7 years of that many people working has to be the biggest laughing stock in the industry.

But they keep getting paid for doing nothing, because there is no publisher to fire their asses.

So why would they ever release a full product? Once they do that, they get a bit more money from sales from people who refused to back, but after that the gravy train will start to wind down. So why would they ever do that?

Star Citizen is the biggest privatized social welfare fund ever seen. The subtitle of the 'game' should be "How people around the world kept giving 500 guys money to just fuck around, year after year after year."

It will probably take the average user the whole weekend to download the game. I checked it out way back in the first alpha was released when all it had back then was a hangar and a few ships. I think it was about 60-80GB then, so it must be several hundred GB by now. One of the updates failed to install and it wanted to re-download the entire thing, so I uninstalled it and haven't given it another look.

It's not that bad. My RSI folder is just over 50GB. They have probably optimized and compressed some shit since back in the day.

-FPS randomly goes from super smooth 60fps sitting still down to a stutterfest 25fps just by walking or turning the camera slightly despite a pretty good system, sometimes GPU and CPU usage is super low ( around 20-30% for GPU and lower for CPU ), but you get 25fps and a stutterfest even on the lowest settings with vsync off. Problem can't be SSD streaming cause the only better SSDs for gaming are either SM2262EN controller equipped SSDs and Intel Optane, if it runs this shitty on one of the best SSDs out there, I don't wanna see what it looks like on a budget one. It can't be the fiber connection either and it can't be the GPU and CPU at these settings, which leaves... the code.

That certainly has nothing to do with the streaming from disk. There isn't really a single game that truly benefits from a NVMe SSD at all (real world level loading times are only 1s to 2s faster than SATA SSDs and streaming is a non-issue).
In Star Citizen's case it is poor coding, debugging crap and their wonky as fuck online architecture that is causing the stutters. Remember: Even after $250 million and 8 years in development they still haven't added a second star system because they can't get their server transition shit working.

Just tried it, here's my little review on test system i7-8700 + 1060 6gb + 32gb RAM + fiber 500/500 connection + NVMe SSD ( HP EX920, SM2262 controller, 2nd best behind the SM2262EN for gaming, faster than all Samsung NVMe drives ) .

The good:

-The character creation screen is pretty nice.
-Graphics look polished despite being an Alpha with minimal popup
-Audio is great

The bad:

-Controls are awful
-Bugged NPCs everywhere
-No proper tutorial leaves you scratching your head

The ugly:

-FPS randomly goes from super smooth 60fps sitting still down to a stutterfest 25fps just by walking or turning the camera slightly despite a pretty good system, sometimes GPU and CPU usage is super low ( around 20-30% for GPU and lower for CPU ), but you get 25fps and a stutterfest even on the lowest settings with vsync off. After a quarter billion $ and how many years in development? Not impressed. This thing needs a LOT of work before becoming anything close to playable. Mind you, if the rumors about another 5 years before getting into beta are true, that ugly bit might just be a temporary thing as we'll be running better stuff when it actually releases and they'll have time to iron out the bugs in the code producing that awful stuttering.
