EA Steam Return Hint

A tweet from Electronic Arts adds fuel, or at least steam, to the recent indications that EA Games will be making a return to Steam (thanks DSOGaming). In a bygone time Electronic Arts games were sold on Steam, but that ended when EA launched Origin as their own online store back in 2011. The new tweet offers a visual hint at the return, showing an EA mug emitting wisps of steam. This seems like a pretty straightforward clue, though it could just mean that they really like coffee.

Personally I'm sure they lost more than 10%, leaving Steam.

Personally I'm sure you have never read a single EA financial report or you'd know that's bullshit.
So your saying you read their FinRep and found it was all sunshine and lollipops? Giggle

There's no way ea didn't take a huge hit, leaving Steam. Personally 10% is an extremely conservative estimate. There's no way ea would broadcast publicly how much they lost directly related to leaving Steam. On the contrary they would do everything possible to cover it up.

With Terminator: Dark Fate just around the corner - could this be an elaborate "I'll be back" promo stunt by EA and James Cameron? /sarcasm

I think EA realizes their image and brand is shot, their top-tier games isn't doing well, their subscription service isn't taking off like they thought it would. So they're moving their catalog back to Steam because they know there's a huge untapped market there. It also speaks volumes that they would choose Steam over EGS.

Sort of. Steam changed their rules so that any DLC for a game sold on steam must also be able to be bought on steam. They did not care if you could get it elsewhere as well just as long as a user could get it on steam too. Crysis 3 I think was the first to run afoul of the rule change.

Makes sense. So you don't have to go to different places to get your game then get the DLC. Like you had to with Mass Effect 2. DAO at least downloaded them in game.

What? You're one of the biggest EGS cheerleaders around here every time they buy an exclusive for their store, but EA going exclusive with their own store makes them a shit publisher who makes greedy decisions?

Well, as long as it makes sense to you, I guess.

Cheerleader? lmao yeah, that's me. No, I'm the guy that's not afraid to buy a game from another source. How does that make me a cheerleader?

EA is getting desperate. That's all it is.

ea was just gaining profits from new markets like China, they still felt the bite of not being on Steam. Even if Steam only boosted ea corp profits by 10%, you know those selfish greedy bastards, want it. Personally I'm sure they lost more than 10%, leaving Steam.

If it's just older games, they probably won't sell much DLC. I'm pretty sure they have since come out with ultimate editions or add-on bundles for those games that used to have in-game microtransactions anyway, such as DA2.

Assuming they do get back on Steam, it will be interesting to see how things go for the EGS afterwards... Perhaps they are only going to put their "old" titles up on Steam?

It's also possible that the subscriptions aren't selling. I'm kind of dubious how much appetite gamers really have for multiple subscription services, and publisher-specific subscriptions seem like an especially poor value.

Maybe they'll hold out for EGS exclusivity bwuahah.

If they would also bring new games to Steam they might as well kill off their Basic and Premier subs right now. The subscription vault or library would be completely devalued if the titles would not be exclusive to the subscription service.

They don't need the titles to be exclusive to drive more traffic there which is the goal. Just like titles featured on Gamepass drastically increase their sales even without factoring in DLC, even though people can get them for "free" or discounted elsewhere.
