Chivalry: Medieval Warfare Turning Seven

A post on the Chivalry 2 Website celebrates the upcoming seventh anniversary of the release of Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, Torn Banner Studios' multiplayer hack-and-slash game that was first released on October 16, 2012. They say they'll have lots to share soon about Chivalry 2 and what's next for the franchise, but for now, they offer a postmortem of the first game, including a look at what went wrong as well as what they got right. Word is: "Despite these flaws and mistakes, we look back on Chivalry today with a mixture of pride and determination to capture the potential we left on the table, as we continue our work on Chivalry 2." Here's their overview:

Upon its launch, Chivalry was well-received as a cult hit and its unique appeal launched our indie dream into the best selling title on Steam throughout the week of Christmas 2012. Sure, it was rough around the edges in everything it did, but it captured a certain special combination that somehow let it become greater than the sum of its parts.

Oh, EGS exclusive as well ? They couldn't set themselves up to fail any harder.

Shame nothing structural has been done about the game for about 5 years now. But that's why we have Mordhau now.

Very cynical of Torn Banner to post a Mea Culpa only after Mordhau became a runaway hit, showing where they went wrong. TB received clear feedback from their fans what needed doing (it's rare but does happen) but kept focussing on the wrong things:

  • cosmetic mtx

  • dumbing down of gameplay and splitting their fanbase with Chivalry Deadliest Warrior

  • reducing the importance of melee in 'sequel' Mirage Arcane Warfare

  • Now Mordhau fixed everything wrong with their game and sold millions, they're trying to win back the fans they publicly derided for their feedback on the forums before ? Better make sure Chivalry 2 is better than the last game you erased from your site because it bombed so badly, boys. You're going to need it.
