Rumor: Bully 2 Development "Fizzled Out"

Citing "sources with knowledge of development," VGC reports that Rockstar worked on a Bully sequel early this decade, but that effort "fizzled out." Their source informs them that this produced a playable build of an open-world game to follow up on the bullying game before the effort was shelved. They tap a "second well-placed source" who tells them this occupied between a 12 and 18 months, but the team never managed to decide what direction to take the story. This story is unconfirmed, as they say Rockstar declined to comment on the rumor. Here's more:
The second source said the work culminated in a playable version of Bully 2 described as a “very small slice” of the game, complete with simplistic open-world gameplay. It was built using the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE), the same engine used for Grand Theft Auto 4 and 5, Max Payne 3, and both Red Dead Redemption games.

Despite that progress, Bully 2 never built momentum and “fizzled out”, the source said. The team were moved onto other projects.

“It existed, it was playable, it was just a shame it never got off the ground,” they said. Many developers that worked at Rockstar New England during the time period list an “unannounced game” on their CVs.

It would just be a nice target for social justice warriors to blabber endlessly about.

Maybe internally those developing were feeling a little like that, this isn't the game to make right now and might be a good reading of the room for them, i dunno.

It sounds like this project got shutdown almost 10 years ago, so it's probably not much to do with the current climate around video game content.

I wonder who the target audience is for this game.

The 40%'ers who play video games.

Bully was a disappointment to me. The protagonist really just wasn't that much of a badass. I wanted to roleplay the kid that he fought in the endgame. Now HE was a prick.
