Video Calls Out Modern Warfare Netcode

A new video from Battle(non)sense takes a look at the network performance of the Windows version of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Beta. The title of the video asks if this is "WORSE Than Black Ops 4!?" The conclusion seems to be that it is, as VG247 notes:
To start, in all of their testing, beta matches ran on dedicated servers, eliminating host migration and other degradation issues common with listen servers. In their new video, the YouTuber reveals that the Modern Warfare beta used a 62Hz tickrate for client and servers, which is slightly above the standard.

But that only applies to modes up to 20-players. In Ground War 64, server send rate drops to 24Hz, with client send rate peaking at 70Hz. As for the delay, Battle(non)sense measured an average value of 98.6ms for damage, 106.2ms for gunfire, and 109.8ms for movement. Things are even worse in Ground War with 64 players, as the figures jump to 136.4ms, 152ms, and 155.8 respectively.

These numbers are almost three times as high as those reported in Black Ops 4’s standard modes, and much higher in delay than other popular shooters like Overwatch, Battlefield 5, PUBG and CS:GO. In fact, Blackout actually ends up comparable or lower than Modern Warfare’s standard modes.

There’s also the issue of split packets, which are reportedly common in Modern Warfare’s netcode. This could exacerbate problems for players who suffer any packet loss, and may worsen the effect of super bullets when minor connection issues occur.

Yeah, Bethesda used a new engine for Skyrim, too.

If they don't name what engine they're using now, it's hard to believe they finally ditched the idtech roots. 'Cause then the alternative would be that they created a whole new one from scratch, lol...

No information about the newest game yet on here, but plenty of details about the previous iterations:

Did you know that CoD is STILL based on the Q3A Engine (released in 1999)? A fork of Id Tech 3 I believe?

Does this matter? What percentage is really using that old code?

Apex Legends used the Source engine. Not Source 2, the original Source. So a game in 1999 was built using an engine based on Quake 2.

It's really not surprising or a big deal.

24 tic for the 64-man mode is actually fine. Battlefield was like that for 15 years until they loved to all internal 60hz servers for all modes back in BF1. Yeah, it wasn't amazing, but it got the job done. Very few games even try to get something like that working in a 64-man arena.

And you mention "that old engine" re: CoD. Fun fact I get to trot out every 12 months: Did you know that CoD is STILL based on the Q3A Engine (released in 1999)? A fork of Id Tech 3 I believe? Yep! Stay classy CoD. That engine is literally old enough to vote, and next year it'll be able to buy beer.

Train your son to boycott and to not hang out with friends that don't have training in boycotting. Otherwise, you're a bad parent.

24hz tick rate on the server and split packets (a big no in RT networking)

Looks to be another COD game then Half assed romp on a horrificly outdated engine. Great for SP once, bad for MP.

Shocked I tell you, utterly shocked.

I was watching my son play the Beta last weekend & it was so weird because sometimes the matched looked good/ played good - then other times the hit markers and what was shown on screen was so far off of what was happening , we could tell it was due to bad netcode/ server reporting / etc....

I told him it was probably a culmination of the old engine trying to handle more than 12 players & the coding of allowing cross-play between consoles and PC . Plus console players getting access to 'aim-assist' shooting as an option..
What do you expect is going to happen ...

On a side note , getting worse netcode than the last few battlefields is an achievement all in it self...
