Control Exclusivity Cost Epic $10M+?

Market Analyst Daniel Ahmad tweets about an Italian Financial Statement that seems to show just how much cash Epic Games had to fork over to make Control an Epic Games Store exclusive (thanks PCGamesN). He says this shows a payment to the parent company of 505 Games for €9.49 million ($10.5M USD). A response tweet from Danilo helps confirm the conclusion with some further translation: "It is explicitly stated in the report that the earnings from Control are derived from the digital marketplace that requested exclusivity for its distribution." Here are Ahmad's two tweets on the topic:

Which I would imagine is for exclusivity.

Yep. The payment from Epic was 100% for Control and was for the exclusivity deal. There was no payment from Sony or Microsoft.

Unclear if there were any other strings attached to the payment, other than exclusivity ofc.

The Unreal engine just about everywhere.
I sat thru a video walkthrough of an assisted living center 6 years ago and thought "Gee, That Looks Familiar," sure enough it was made with the unreal engine.

You probably missed where it said UE had 7 million users (naturally not all 7 million will be a huge payoff).
Or that Epic snagged $1.25 billion from venture and private equity leaders Kleiner Perkins and KKR.

Epic was a multi-billion dollar company long before Fortnite. They are a graphic engine company that makes games to promote their engines, they have been doing that for decades.

Metro Exodus is available on Xbox Game Pass for PC (quite a mouthfull) which is in beta currently and only costs 4 USD per month. Quite a few games included, also Gears 5. Worth a couple of months in my opinion even though I didn't end up liking Gears.

A "market analyst" should know this, but there are a number of alternatives to this being an "exclusivity lump sum" that are a lot more realistic.

Most likely this is a milestone payment that will be shortened against future sales (or preorders existing at that time). Obviously Epic is giving something for the exclusivity, but 10M EUR makes little sense. Prepayment for sales, a guaranteed minimum number of copies sold and preferential treatment for a while is much more likely than a huge lump sum.

I'm not saying Epic couldn't afford it, but it just makes zero sense.

Btw, this isn't just me guessing, it has been reported before that Epic has guaranteed sales numbers in return for exclusivity (for ooblets and phoenix point).

This concept makes more sense for Epic, because if they can help the game succeed they end up not actually paying that much for the exclusivity. It also makes sense for the developer since they also have incentive to make the game succeed, which a lump sum payment would not really contribute to even if it pays the bills.

60 dollar game of which they make 12%, but per Tim Sweeney, after taking costs etc into consideration, they make "a few percent" of profit. So let's be generous and give them 5% of profit.

10.5M/(60*0.05)= 3.5 million copies to break even. For a Remedy game on the PC.

A good portion of the Control install base on PC probably got it as part of the NVidia promotion for new GPUs. That is how I ended up with a copy of the game. I didn't seek out or buy the game directly.

If the games still even interests me, I can wait many years for a $5 dollar sale if need be.

I'm expecting this too (full price). There's been practically zero sales, or very meager sales, on ANYTHING related to EGS since they started doing this exclusivity shit. Preorder sales/GMG and such. So I can't expect them to not try to pull that, depending on the publisher.

But yeah, people are probably not going to care by then, or just wait for fully patched, DLC-complete games at a discount at that point.
