Op Ed

Forbes India - Star Citizen: The most expensive video game ever made.
"Chris Roberts has spent seven years and raised nearly $300 million—most of it from average gamers—building Star Citizen. It's on pace to be the costliest video game ever made and—outside of cryptocurrency—the world's largest crowdfunded project. It's still not ready. It may never be."

I know what hallelujah means, and it doesn't mean Kanye, Jesus, or the "original pronunciation" as you're alluding.

Just referring the j/i/y connection with Hebrew Greek and Latin.
Mentioned nothing about meaning. Chill.

I don't think it makes sense to include Prey and DNF on that list. The released products have nothing from the original development cycles. Those games were stopped, scrapped, and restarted multiple times.

TF2 is similar but I bet it has a more coherent development lineage than Prey and DNF. I don't know much about SC2's development or the remaining titles with 9+ years.

Development began in 2011. Chris spent a year and over a million dollars working with the Crytek folks to create the announcement trailer that debut at GDC Online in Austin in 2012.

That said, perspective is essential. Here is a list of the video games that spent a long time in development.

Half-Life 2: 1999-2004 (5 years)
Final Fantasy 12: 2000-2006 (6 years)
Resident Evil 4: 1999-2005 (6 years)
Deus Ex: 1994-2000 (6 years)
The Last Guardian: 2009-2015 (6 years)
L.A. Noire: 2004-2011 (7 years)
Aliens Colonial Marines: 2006-2013 (7 years)
Galleon: 1997-2004 (7 years)
Spore: 2000-2008 (8 years)
Star Citizen: 2011-2019 (8 years)
Too Human: 1999-2008 (9 years)
Team Fortress 2: 1998-2007 (9 years)
Final Fantasy 15: 2006-2016 (10 years)
Diablo 3: 2001-2012 (11 years)
Prey: 1995-2006 (11 years)
StarCraft 2: 2003-2015 (12 years)
Duke Nukem Forever: 1996-2011 (15 years)

Comparatively, TF2, D3, SC2, and FF15 took longer to publish.
It's a good point to remember that there are successful games that took longer to finish. I think one concern I have is that I can't see a path to completion for this game beyond the scope limited SQ 42.

That isn't true at all...because they were actually published. This scam will never come to fruition until the gravy train stops. Then, whatever hot mess they have will be unceremoniously dumped out on the suckers that paid for it so they can say they fulfilled their legal obligation to deliver. And then they will all disappear and the hot mess is all that will remain.

Seems like a gigantic missed opportunity for a title: "Star Citizen: The most expensive video game Never made."

It's not the most expensive video game ever made because it would have to actually be made for that to be true.

I'm just curious about his obligations to his corporate backers. I'm immensely curious what sort of deals were struck for how much cash.

It has been years since SC's 100gb install has been worth the HD real estate. I'll revisit when there's some semblance of a game, but it's not worthy of the space at the moment.
