Fun fact, Valve implemented lootboxes in TF2 almost 1 1/2 year before EA introduced their version to the FIFA franchise.

Yet Valve sees almost no derision for doing that, while everyone else using lootboxes get piles of (deserved) hate piled on them.

Because *hats* are nothing like the straight-up casino gambling found in FIFA titles. It's not even remotely close to the same.

I'd argue that what CS:Go had, though, was ridiculous. I haven't really played many games with loot boxes, probably just CS:Go and Borderlands 2 (if that even counts), but what CS:Go had was infuriating. Win a box, but have to buy a key? A marketplace around selling what you get, with you virtually guaranteed to turn a dollar into 17 cents?

A huge turnoff in that game.

I agree that the Marketplace is a form of gambling that needs regulating. It's a reverse of gambling in the sense that people play to obtain items to be sold on the Marketplace for dozens, hundreds, or in rare cases, thousands of real-world dollars.
A slot machine is still gambling if it pours out tokens that have to be redeemed at a counter near the entrance to the casino. It's not "reverse gambling".

And the Marketplace (ie. where you redeem your "tokens") is an integral part of how Valve's lootboxes work. Valve would almost certainly never have made TF2 F2P in this way if they hadn't also implemented trading via the Marketplace. Especially since they get a cut of every monetary transaction that goes on there.

Sure, the cosmetics you get from the lootboxes in TF2 etc. are different from the "required to play the mode" boxes for the Ultimate Team modes. But where FIFA and similar products have escaped being labelled "legally gambling" in many places due to the inability to cash out, Valve's lootboxes have no such loophole to fall back on because the Marketplace exists. Yet it seems as if legislators are ignoring either that aspect or Valve in their evaluations of lootboxes.

And while there were concerns about various TF2, DOTA2 & CS:GO skin gambling sites in 2015-2017, that was mostly brought up on the scale it grew to due to a couple of the site owners marketing their sites directly to minors (and trying to look like they didn't own those sites in the process). Valve's actions in that situation? Send out C&D letters to the largest sites, then go about their business as usual. You can still find working TF2/DOTA2/CS:GO skin gambling sites if you do a search.

Doesn't it tire you out to think in absolutes? No, it doesn't.
