New Steam Library Beta This Month

Valve announces details of changes coming to the Steam Library, saying they will launch beta testing of these on September 17th. They offer screenshots showing off the new look and discuss how the update will make it easier to keep up with your games and your friends. They also announce the rollout of new authoring tools to allow developers to post events and announcements, saying that as of September 17th they will be able to make such posts to the Steam Library. Here's an overview of both announcements:

The New Steam Library open beta will start on Tuesday, September 17th. All players will be able to opt-in and try out the new features free of charge. Details on the upcoming improvements for players are available in a Steam blog post, which you can read here.

Additionally, new tools were rolled out today for game developers to post events and announcements within Steam and, starting Sept 17, within the Steam Library. You can see more about those updates here.

Why not allow people to customize the clients colors like the Windows desktop?

Because none of the workers at Valve is interested in making that.

And it already exists.

I've been using STEAM skins for years. I actually just recently switched back to a black color one similar to the original but a bit more clean. For the a few years until recently I had the entire interface pale white with blue accents to match my PC case, lol.

If they are going to make a big change, I'm sure it'll disable/break skins but eventually someone will figure out how to do it again unless Steam offers the ability from the get go. If I were them, I would probably allow that since it gives Steam a nice added touch to personalize it more. This could add another edge over EGS/Origin/Uplay, etc. Not saying that's the primary reason we use these stores, but every little reason to feel they are in favor of the consumer more is a plus in my book.

Yep that's how it is with Steam.

Not sure if its to the extent with how ... weird.. you could get with Winamp. If it is, cool. I had one that redesigned the whole interface window shell to look like .. Oh here's one of them:

And some ones that ...really kind of stretched the concept of an interface:

I had some awesome skins for that, way back when.

Unless the broke it or something Steam has has the ability to do custom skins for a long long time.

It did, it even had a second default theme, silver... a long time ago. I think it still has the option somewhere but it hasnít worked in ages. IIRC itís a drop down, but itís disabled.

I checked and there are guides from less than a year ago (date range limited my search since there were a ton of old articles) explaining how to change the skin and a bunch of sites to download skins from. I'm wagering not broken.

I was on a BSD laptop, but yeah looking at Windows the option is still there. The other default theme, however, is gone. Not sure if the ability was just gone temporarily, or I just remembered incorrectly.

There is apparently a steamskins.org and a few other sites, but the ones on there are pretty awful. I think I will stick with the default.
