MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries Delayed Again; Epic Games Store Exclusive

Piranha Games announces the release of MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is being delayed by three months, and the mech combat sequel is now expected on December 10th. The game was first announced for launch in 2018, but about a year ago Piranha pushed this out to this year, later specifying a September 10th launch. The news also confirms recent speculation that the release will be exclusive to the Epic Games Store. To help deal with blowback from the delay and the EGS news, they also announce they are offering preorder customers full refunds between now and September 1st. This comes with a warning that customers who accept a refund will forfeit their right to participate in closed beta testing planned for November and will lose their exclusive DLC bonuses, though they will be able to retain all bonus MechWarrior Online content they received. Here's a FAQ that covers the game, its new release date, Epic Games Store exclusivity, refunds, and the closed beta. Word is they will also be holding a Town Hall session later today and another tomorrow:

Developer Piranha Games today announced that MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, the classic series’ first single player campaign-focused entry in more than 17 years, will now drop into battle on December 10th exclusively on the Epic Games store. Community preorder pilots will be able to run practice missions in November via a closed beta ahead of the game’s full launch.

“Our partnership with the Epic Games store allows Piranha the opportunity to make sure MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries meets our internal goal of creating the best MechWarrior game possible,” said Russ Bullock, executive producer. “Since we announced the development of the first single-player MechWarrior game in 17 years, we have stated that our goal was to deliver to fans a MechWarrior: Mercenaries experience with true freedom of choice and to be able to share that experience in a coop setting.

Understandably some fans will be disappointed that they have to wait a short while longer for MechWarrior 5, but it’s important to Piranha Games that we absolutely get this right. We are happy to say that our new partnership with Epic Games store allows us the time and ability to accomplish our goals both in the games development and marketing efforts.”

Fans looking to obtain refunds from their preorder of any tier are able to do so by September 1st. Preorder refunds of any tier will be refunded in full. Additionally, fans seeking refunds will be able to keep all bonus MechWarrior Online content from the Standard, Collector and Ultimate Editions of the preorder, which amount to $100, $180, and $300 dollars worth of in-game currency and content for MechWarrior Online including all bonus items like XP, premium time, badges, decals, cockpit items and more, depending on which preorder tier they purchased. Refunded preorders will be unable to participate in the upcoming closed beta for MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, now scheduled for November as well as lose the exclusive MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries DLC items.

More detailed information on announced features coming to MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries can be found at the game’s FAQ: https://mw5mercs.com/faq.

Piranha Games will host two Town Hall sessions this week: The first begins tonight at 6:00 p.m. PT for fans located in North America, and the second Town Hall is scheduled for 10 a.m. PT tomorrow, July 26th, for fans located in Europe. Both events will take place on the community preorder Discord. Fans are encouraged to join the conversation and voice their thoughts.

MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is modeled after the gameplay style from MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries, granting players the freedom to run their campaigns how they choose. In MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, pilots will build, manage, and guide their own mercenary unit through a multi-year campaign during the sprawling Third and Fourth Succession Wars enjoying by far the greatest amount of player freedom and choice compared to past titles.

Whether braving missions alone, alongside AI-controlled pilots, or with the help of up to three friends via co-op play, pilots will face complicated situations with no perfect solution as they choose which contracts to accept, where in the Inner Sphere to direct their attention, and how to balance repairs or upgrades with maintaining their unit’s precious resources.

Out of the ones you mentioned, GOG is the much riskier gig. If CDPR produce a flop or two then GOG is toast or at least up for sale to the highest bidder.

How is GOG risky? If they go belly up, all their installers will keep working until the end of time?

Well, jdreyer said "in operation". Sure, you can backup your entire GOG library but that hardly equates as GOG still being "in operation".

I believe that all the stores he mentioned will be just fine in five years but if I had to rank them in terms of the very low risk of a shutdown then GOG would still be the no. 1 candidate by far.
I also said I wasn't concerned "for various reasons." So if GoG ceases operation, I'm not concerned since I have all the GoG installers I need backed up, as Creston pointed out.

As for Epic being around since '91, I'll point out that Google has been around since 98, yet has a laundry list of services that have been cancelled over that period. If EGS fails to perform, Epic will shutter it while continuing to make games and improve and license their engine. That's just business. With EA and Steam, game publishing and distribution is their central business. That's not really the case with Epic. While there's no guarantee with any of these companies, EGS is the most at risk. I give EGS only a slightly better chance at being around in 5 years than Google Stadia.

It's so amusing how people love to bring this up. Skins, mounts, effects, and 'rare' digital products are a staple of MMOs that sell content rather than subscriptions....the Golden Mechs were no different. It allowed them to tap the whale market. Path of Exile (probably the best f2p MMO) sells overpriced geegaws. The space game that shall not be named is selling ships for multiple times that amount. AND THEY DON'T EVEN HAVE A GAME YET! Just chuckle and be thankful for those whales that are funding my free to play spree... Who the hell cares?

I'll tell you who cares.... The whiny bitches that couldn't afford it, but some little corner of their soul that looks like Smeagol craved the goldenses mechses.

Of course it's delayed and exclusive to the Epic store. Piranha Games is an incompetent dev and of course they love money. They were selling $500 golden skinned Mechs in Mechwarrior Online, for the whales/super whales.

Yes, I'm sure a terrible game can be turned into a great one within 3 months.

What's more likely is that the game was going to be delayed regardless of Epic's bribes and that Piranha made the exclusivity deal simply because they knew the game isn't going to sell very well. Getting paid without needing to sell any copies is a great deal.

I'm fairly sure that's illegal.

It's illegal.

My plan was to pick this up soon after release (barring a DOA game). I think my biggest concern buying from EGS is, will they be in operation in 5 years when I want to replay my game? I don't have this concern with Steam, EA, or GoG for various reasons.

That seems like a rather strange concern. Epic have been around since 1991. Their engine has arguably been the most used and most successful one in AAA development for nearly two decades now. The licensing is their bread & butter business that would easily keep them alive even if Fortnite collapsed over night (which it won't).

Out of the ones you mentioned, GOG is the much riskier gig. If CDPR produce a flop or two then GOG is toast or at least up for sale to the highest bidder.

You don't see EGS as a flop? That's rich like a meal featuring Coq Au Vin along with a side of Croque Madame, served with hot Jambon-Beurre and bookended by a slice of Cherry Clafoutis from a fancy French restaurant. Beatnik

Heh, its Pirhana. They'll definately take the route of a "new" release on Steam/GoG or whoever with at best 10% off prices because you know, its new to Steam.

1 month of closed beta testing?
They'll delay it even further once bugs start to appear.
No 0-day patch will save it.

Sigh, the last thing PGI needed was another PR disaster like this. What the hell were they thinking? Is an extra 15% worth all this bad press?

Yes, I have checked the archived version of the Mechwarrior 5 site. It specifically mentioned a Steam key in the preorder FAQ.
No kidding. Think they idiotically got back together with the remnants of the company that caused them huge decline, howood. They rushed out Gothic 3, 6 months early and made crap games in their universe. So I guess whoring out to egs is about par. Protest

people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.
