What Happens to Purchases if Google Kills Stadia?

A Google Stadia AMA on Reddit yesterday answered some questions about Google's planned streaming game service. Since Google is notorious for pulling the plug on projects that don't pull their weight (Wikipedia puts the number at 50), Google's Andrey Doronichev was hit with the question of what will happen to game purchases if Stadia ends up going to a farm upstate to live with a nice couple. The response is that nothing in life is certain:
We get this a lot. I hear you. Moving to the cloud is scary. I felt the same way when music was transitioning from files to streaming. I still have all my old CDs in the garage… although it's hard to find a CD player these days :)

The same happened to Movies and Photos and my Docs and other files… And it’s great! Games are no different. Eventually all of our games will be safely in the cloud too and we'll feel great about it. We’ve been investing a ton in tech, infrastructure and partnerships over the past few years. Nothing in life is certain, but we’re committed to making Stadia a success.

The games you buy on Stadia are yours to play. From day one we’ll support Takeout, so that you can download your game metadata, including saves if you want to.

Of course, it’s ok to doubt my words. Theres nothing I can say now to make you believe if you don't. But what we can do is to launch the service and continue investing in it for years to come. Exactly how we've been doing with gMail, Docs, Music, Movies and Photos. That’s exactly what we’re committed to.

You buy games on Stadia, those games will be GONE in 3-5 years when they shut that shit down again.

I know, we run the risk with all of our other digital storefronts too. GabeN promised they'd make all the games capable of running offline permanently if they ever take Steam down, but it's just a promise. It's not in writing anywhere. Every other storefront doesn't even have this promise.

But none of them are Google, which is fucking notorious for shutting down everything they don't like anymore. Stadia will undoubtedly be in this list. Purchase at your own peril.
At least with Steam, you can spoof that Steam is running pretty easily.
