Amazon Making The Lord of the Rings MMOG

Amazon Game Studios announces they are partnering with Middle-earth Enterprises and Leyou Technologies to create a free-to-play MMOG based on The Lord of the Rings for Windows and consoles. This does not yet carry a release date, but Gematsu has a press release revealing this is based on the novels rather than the movies:
Set in the world of Middle-earth portrayed in The Lord of the Rings literary trilogy, the game will give fans around the globe a new, immersive game experience for epic exploration of the vast world of Tolkien. In addition to the game development collaboration, Amazon Studios is separately developing a new Amazon Original TV series based on The Lord of the Rings for Prime Video unrelated to the game.

Amazon Game Studios and Leyou will jointly develop the game for PC and consoles, and Amazon Game Studios will market and publish the title globally with the exception of China, which will be managed by Leyou. The collaboration brings together Amazon’s game technology and talented MMO developers, and Leyou’s expertise in designing free-to-play games and operating live-service games.

“We’re committed to bringing customers games of the highest quality, both with our own original IP as well as beloved cultural pillars like The Lord of the Rings,” said Christoph Hartmann, VP, Amazon Game Studios. “Tolkien’s Middle-earth is one of the richest fictional worlds in history, and it gives our team of experienced MMO developers–from the same studio developing New World–tremendous opportunity to play and create. We have a strong leadership team in place to helm this new project, and we’re actively growing our team to help build this incredible experience.”

“Bringing Middle-earth to life necessitates having the very best partners, and Amazon’s customer obsession, technology, and talented teams make it the ideal choice for a co-developer and publisher,” said Alex Xu, CEO of Leyou Technologies Holdings. “We believe our combined resources and expertise will result in a beautiful and compelling game that customers will love and play for years to come.”

“Who among us hasn’t wanted to take part in an epic adventure,” said Fredrica Drotos, Chief Brand and Licensing Officer at Middle-earth Enterprises. “More than 60 years after the publication of The Fellowship of the Ring, we’re delighted that Amazon Game Studios has partnered with Leyou to bring their respective expertise to build a much anticipated game that will immerse us in the beloved, epic world of Middle-earth, envisioned by Professor Tolkien.”

The Amazon Game Studios leadership team includes veteran developers who helped create of some of the world’s most popular MMO games. Amazon Game Studios is also home to New World, an in-development sandbox MMO game set in an alternate 17th century world.

We don't need another f2p lord of the rings mmo that's based on the books. Having it be more like the films would have at least differentiated it.

Back when Athlon (a Leyou subsidiary) got the rights to LOTR last year, it was apparently for the pre-book stuff. From what Athlon's president says, the game will be set before the age of men so you won't have any humans running around.

Sounds like the "Years of the Trees"? Elves galore.

Maybe it will hit such highs as Neverwinter has done for D&D and MMO's!

Perhaps they should start with making tic-tac-toe first. Beyond Chris Roberts time frames, this Amazon Games Studio has done diddly poo for pc games to this point.

I still play lotro. We don't need another f2p lord of the rings mmo that's based on the books. Having it be more like the films would have at least differentiated it.

And yeah, mmos are a bit old school these days.

One thing (of many) the LoTRO game did right (played it ages ago (no meta-pun intended)) was you never "died" from battle. You just became too severely wounded and "passed out". This meshed with the low-fantasy lore.

I bet this is going to be another - you're the chosen one; brought back as part wraith to end the evil threatening ME.... unkillable just like every other player you see bunny-hopping around you...

In theory the artwork & CG that's going into the show might be used and therefore interesting but I'm so fucking done with LOTR. By the time the Hobbit movies were done my love for the series was pretty much exhausted and it's never recovered. I went from a yearly re-read of LOTR to having not touched my copies in almost 10 years.

Well it probably didn’t help that the longest book was one movie with stuff cut out (most everything at the gate of and in Mordor plus the appendices) then replaced with 17 different ending points, while the shortest book was milked into freaking three films.

It didn't help at all. Plus the subsequent milking of the franchise is boring AF.

I still haven't seen the last 2 Hobbit films. I never will. I saw the first and aside from the kind of cool Misty Mountains song I was unimpressed.

I did see pictures of Orlando Bloom as Legolas and... yikes I don't know what happened but he landed in the uncanny valley for me and just felt like he wasn't a real person. I guess that's what happens when you try to make someone 20 years older than their original part look 80 years younger.

Edit: Admission- I neither own, nor have I watched, the extended versions of Lord of the Rings. I know what's in them and I don't need them. I'll go to the books for that content.

I have 1000% mmo burnout.

No more nerfing for me.
No more combat revamps / respeccing for me.
No more making hard earned items / crafting materials obsolete with expansions.
Essentially, no more “rule changes” after actively investing lots of time.
I’ll stick to single player games, thank you.

I'd be more interested in a tie-in to Wheel of Time at this point.

I'd really love to get a copy of the Wheel of Time game (1999) off Steam or GOG but I suppose since it's a licensed property it isn't gonna happen.

I bought it way back before I ever read the novels and it was... weird lol.

It was kind of a thinking man's shooter since your weapons could easily be reflected back or you could swap places with your enemy and stuff. It was neat. Weird but neat.

This reminds me a little of when Paizo announced the Pathfinder MMO. They had 'Top Men', no published video games, big claims, and no hints about the design or style they were going after until later.

They ended up designing a game based on one guy's vision who was still obsessed with the 1990s style of MMOs despite everyone tell them that said model was not viable anymore. It was about as successful as you'd expect.

Between this game and the show, it's hard to see these works as nothing other than a soulless cash grab. The universal cynicism in this thread is not misplaced, IMO.

Also, having low expectations means I get to be surprised if they do something decent with it.

The collaboration brings together Amazon’s game technology and talented MMO developers,

You have produced exactly zero games. You have canceled a bunch of games already, and laid off dozens of developers already, so maybe do something first before you start bleating about how awesome you are.
