Steam Redesign Shown

A post on Steam offers a look at the upcoming redesigned user interface for Valve's online gaming platform. They offer images of what this looks like, and directions for content providers to upload new assets to fit the new format. Word is they are weeks away from a public beta:

In March at GDC we announced that the Steam Library is getting an overhaul. The new Library brings together a player’s experience with a game and new content/communications from the developer and community in a richer, more visual layout.

You can start uploading and previewing the new assets today

We are weeks away from the public beta of this new feature set; now is the time to start uploading new assets for your updated library presence. Download the library asset templates here

Steam will create a fallback treatment for both the capsule and header treatment, but adding your branding assets is the best way to showcase your products in your customer’s Steam libraries.

This treatment will apply to all products on Steam, so we encourage you to back-fill older products so they look their best.

Again, I blame it on their silly managerial model. You gotta have *someone* who makes other employees take out the trash.

Steam kinda proves you don't. XD

The biggest issue I see with the updated UI is that it is way too "social." It doesn't address additional library assets like art books, movies, music, and so forth remaining buried under mystery meat navigation somewhere on your hard drive or drives. I created a mockup showing those assets on the game's library page including videos and music.

sometimes you guys complain about the silliest things..

This all seems like minor insignificant changes and really won't affect anyone. It's like when they redid the library look the last 20 times and it's worked out completely fine every time.

I'd really like to see just about all the storefronts/library/launchers spend some real money on solid UI and backend design. Steam isn't alone on this one....but they are the most guilty. Again, I blame it on their silly managerial model. You gotta have *someone* who makes other employees take out the trash.

Okay, good for you? It's still more than what people here are saying, and it IS an improvement.

People know there are other improvements, they've been previously posted about and discussed. We're talking about the ones in this specific news piece. You quoted me but I wasn't being negative about them either, I was just saying that a few people here were overreacting because the library revisions are actually fairly minor and some preexist in the software under different settings.

You are picking an e-fight over nothing with someone who agrees with you, lol.

There is more to the redesign than this (https://www.pcgamer.com/new-steam-design-2019/). It exlicitly says this is more about store assets, people should read more before they comment, but that's Bluesnews for you.

We had a whole long discussion about the rest of it in a previous thread which you obviously missed. I'm also shocked anyone still reads PC Gamer by the way, those guys are real survivors.

This is really just a minor redesign, a lot of this theme is already present in the software, right click on the title headers in library view and fart around. They added some box art and a header, woo?

Also still looks better than the colossal shit heap that is the Epic Games Store. But hey they bought a "face to face social network" today guys, we might get some higher quality CHAT soon mwuahaha! Competition doing great things for us!

Actually I think my favorite client library view is the GOG Galaxy beta, shit is DOPE.

Yeah we read about this when it was first announced. This particular post is about the assets aspect of the slight Library redesign. Not sure what the chastising is about.

My Steam library is always set to "List" mode, so it won't affect me :)

I keep it in small list mode showing only installed games. I switch to large list mode if I need to find and install a game. They used to have a button at the top right that switched between small and large mode, but they removed it a long time ago. I wish they'd bring that back, but I'm afraid they're probably going to ditch the small list mode.

Agreed. Why don't they just hire some UI specialists? The possibilities to make something functional and beautiful are endless - when you know what you're doing.

Wow, they've added basic web page design elements that any free webpage builder site has had access to for years. Plus it's been thoroughly polished by a team of psychologists who specialize in page placement, sales, advertising and marketing.
yippee
