Baldur's Gate III Announced

Today's Google Stadia event included the announcement of Baldur's Gate III, confirming indications that this will be developed (and published) by Divinity creators Larian Studios. The unveiling of the D&D RPG sequel includes an announcement teaser trailer and word that the Baldur's Gate III website is online, as are the game's listings on GOG.com and Steam. There's also an article about the game on IGN with quotes from Larian on the project. Here's what they are announcing for now, which does not include a release date:
Larian Studios is proud to announce that it is developing and publishing Baldur’s Gate III on PC and Google Stadia. Created in close collaboration with the Dungeons & Dragons team at Wizards of the Coast, Baldur’s Gate III is based off current D&D mechanics and spells and is the official new chapter in the legendary series.

Baldur’s Gate III will push the boundaries of the RPG genre and offer a rich narrative with unparalleled player freedom, high-stakes decisions, unique companion characters and memorable combat. It is Larian Studios’ biggest production ever and will be playable together with friends or as a single-player adventure.

The teaser trailer shows a return of a malevolent presence to Baldur's Gate, intent on devouring it from the inside out, corrupting everything that remains in the Forgotten Realms.

Alone you may resist, but together you can overcome. Gather your party.

“Baldur's Gate means so much to so many people. It's a great responsibility but I think we're ready for it,” said Swen Vincke, Creative Director at Larian Studios. “We're all about creating reactive, systemic worlds that respect player agency and having a chance to apply our team's skillset in a universe as rich as Dungeons & Dragons is a lot of fun. We're working very closely with Wizards to bring an unprecedented level of immersion to the realm of Faerun and I can't wait to show the world what our team cooked up."

“Partnering with Larian, a studio that combines a remarkable history of critically-acclaimed titles with a genuine passion for one of the most iconic locations in Dungeons & Dragons, has been a terrific experience,” said Chris Cocks, President of Wizards of the Coast. “We believe fans of the Baldur’s Gate saga – and even those new to the series – will be thrilled to step into this epic story.”

Larian Studios plans to work closely with the global community to bring the coveted series to life, with more news to follow over the course of the year.

Divinity was excellent.
Baldur's Gate was excellent.

They aren't the same game, though. Please, Larian. Make Baldur's Gate 3 a Baldur's Gate game, not a puzzly fantasy satire.

Baldur's Gate 2 and Planescape Torment are two of the greatest RPGs of all time, especially of that era.

This is awesome news.

I wonder if Larian is going to do Real Time With Pause or their signature turn based stuff? I gotta imagine there will be riots on some forums if they don't include RTWP. Either way super pumped, loved the Illithids in the trailer!

I agree. Nostalgia allows me to still enjoy the combat of BG 1&2, but RTP is terrible in actual implementation.
Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than any other factor, and the contrary opinion is wishfull thinking at its worst. Breeds that forget this basic truth have always paid for it with their lives and freedoms.

I like RTWP, especially for BG type games, simply because Turn Based starts to become a drag if you have a LOT of fights. That said, Larian is so good with their D:OS turn based engine I'd be surprised if this game wasn't also turn based.

Also I saw this announcement before it was on Bluesnews, but it only mentioned Google Stadia. Thank all the D&D Gods it'll be on Gog too.

Also part two, apparently I'm way out of date on D&D lore... Illithids can just infect/inhabit/take over another humanoid like that? Since when? Just curious, I'll roll with it regardless.

Doesn't Beamdog have the rights? Or is that just for the older games?

Excited about this. I've enjoyed all the Divinity games.

This could be a dream come true. Whenever I played Divinity I always imagined how cool it could be as a D&D game so I'm really looking forward to this.

The one thing I hope they do though is allow you to save your characters out of the game. Divinity only saved your character in that savegame so you couldn't just load them up whenever you wanted (for example in a custom game).

Traditionally D&D games (BG, NWN, SotC, etc) allow you to save your characters out of the game so that you can load them up whenever you'd like in a coop/solo game, module, etc.

I seem to remember referring to DOS2 as Baldur's Gate 3 but I echo the sentiment, less puzzles - way more open. Very excited to see Larian working on this; the only studio that I think could make it cool again - not been impressed with Obsidian stuff.

I hate RTWP. D&D is turn-based! Divinity was so much better because of it. Mmm, mind-flayers.

It will be whatever works best with co-op as Im pretty sure that will be a big selling feature. so likely turn based. Same as traditional d&d etc.

Just for the older games. They were only allowed to enhance the original games and to make an expansion for the first game. Everything else was off limits to them.

As for BG III, it's a solid meh. It's a boring setting, the loot is boring with its unspectacular +1 stats, most characters are kinda boring (except Boo), the level progression is usually slow and boring as fuck (yay for being level 5 after 60 hours), everything is boring about this franchise.

And what's up with yet another Baldur's Gate? Looking at video games you could arrive at the conclusion that the entire continent where D&D takes place only has two fucking cities: Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter. Dafuq?!?!

This game is also years away from a playworthy state. Larian is a GaaS dev. It will take ages from early access to the enhanced edition. Yawn. Wake me up when it's finished, "enhanced" and on sale.

Finally, here's a +1 for turn-based combat. It's much better and less messy for a party RPG. Ideally, it would be cool if they offered both options like Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire does now.

Personally I'd rather it be true to DnD 5 than true to Infinity Engine games, as much as I like BG2, the combat system in Infinity engine games is not particularly good nor true to the ruleset for that matter (movement, cover etc.) and if Larian does spell elemental interactions, surfaces etc. then it has to be turn based in combat.

But yeah, Baldurs Gate 3 is a must play for me, especially if it's from Larian, who despite what the naysayers in this forum claim has better writers than Obsidian or Bethesda could ever dream of.

Also get your lore right, that wasn't an Illithid, that was an Ulitharid

Ps.: The video showed how Mindflayers reproduce. Tadpol grows inside host into.. that.
