Larian Teasing Baldur's Gate 3?

There's a conspicuous III on the Larian Studios website to tease us. The first thought might be that this is for Divine Divinity III, but PCGamesN rounds up some indications that this may actually be a tease for Baldur's Gate 3. Last October Larian denied they were working on BG3, but now there are firmer hints that they are. Here's word:
If you inspect the source code of the page, you can download the MP4 file of the teaser video. If you open up that video in a text editor, you’ll find multiple references to Baldur’s Gate 3, first as the name of the PNG file of the logo, then as a copyright notice attributed Dungeons & Dragons owner Wizards of the Coast. The details were dug up by kunken on Twitter.

I wonder what the ruleset would be though. D&D 3.5 is kind of my favorite system. Everything after that kind of sucked donkey balls.

The setting is great though.

It's 100% gonna be 5e if they have a license. And 5e does not suck balls, it just has some problems in late game balance (namely it doesn't have any)

I'm a level 40 child of a towns person - I will now one shot Demogorgon.

Demogorgon dead.

"Bullshit, son" - Drizzt

Proceeds to kill Drizzt and his entire party, claim all the loot and then use the mod to make sure you can keep the loot - cause that BG2 thing was absolute bullshit.

ARRRGH, DO NOT TOY WITH MY EMOTIONS LIKE THIS!!!

Seriously though, I think Larian could/would do a great job with a Baldur's Gate 3, although I assume they'd go turn based instead of RTWP.

I loved BG2; it's easily one of, if not my favorite game of all time and thought BG1 was pretty good, but I'd be hard pressed to say they weren't full of design flaws and bugs, even after all the patches. Community patches/mods made those games the legends they are today. Larian could easily knock BG3 out of the park, if they actually bothered to go through the trouble of getting the licenses sorted out.

*EDIT* CJ_Parker mentioned Obsidian doing BG3 theoretically; I think they'd do a hard pass if it was even offered. They went with all original IPs a long time ago for a reason, and I doubt they'd want to get back into any further control from WotC or anybody else. On top of that, I think they're a little burned out on team based isometric RPGs for awhile, hence that FPS game they're making, Outlands or whatever?

Not that I wouldn't love Obsidian doing BG3, I just don't think they have any desire to.

The latest for sure, isn't that one of Wizards things they do require?

As for the silly story argument, that is the Divinity world, I like to think their writers are able to write accordingly to the topic at hand. Prett easy to imagine that.

Larian is a poor fit for BG3 imo. They have improved their writing and story from Original Sin to Original Sin 2 but it's still nowhere near remarkable.

With Larian at the helm a BG3 will most likely be all about Minsc and Boo and crazy, silly shit like that while looking like a cartoon graphically.

Obsidian would have been the obvious and a much better fit for BG3. You could simply reskin PoE or Deadfire and insert some D&D rules and there you'd have your guaranteed(!) decent(!) BG3.
Deadfire in particular nicely strikes the right balance between a serious, well written theme/story and some good humor regarding the characters/dialogues throughout the game.

Larian should be working on Original Sin 3 (OK, maybe they got a 2nd team on that one) or Dragon Knight Saga 2 but BG3 in their hands is kinda meh.

Hmm as much as I loved Baldur's Gate and its implementation of Vancian magic I think I'd rather have an Original Sin 3. Baldur's Gate is good and I would have loved to have played a Baldur's Gate 3 five or more years ago but nowadays I have much more fun with with the systems from the Original Sin games.

I think that the turn-based combat, spell/environmental interactions and roleplaying flexibility of DOS1&2 would be a perfect match for a modern D&D video game. In fact I'm replaying BG2 right now and just this week found myself thinking "Man, the only studio I'd trust with BG3 would be Larian."

This studio does amazing work! Their Divinity games, especially Origin Sin 1 and 2, are wonderful classic RPGs. I could totally see them making a wonderful BG sequel.

I am absolutely 100% on board with this, this engine is the only engine on the market that is a perfect fit for this. And we can finally get something even DnD in Infinity Engine does not do (but a good DM will always do), interaction of elemental spell effects.

I am hyped

Nooo.. BG1 and 2 are a couple of my favorite games ever, but for fucks sakes just make Divinity 3 and finish the story.

I know it's not going to happen.

I'd imagine the money they'd make with a BG3 would fund their ability to make Divinity 3
