Sounds preposterous... Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. If they said it in a "just trust us" manner without presenting evidence, it's fishy.

They need to present evidence or bust. The burden of proof is on them.

The only reason they kicked him out was because of regime change in Ecuador and backroom deals with the usa. The dirty houseguest narrative plays well in the press and makes a lurid cover story.
