While pure chaos, I'd guess if you live there you are also prepared for something like that to happen. Same way I don't expect winter to be over until April is.

Not sure if experience was the deciding factor. This type of weather is not that untypical in Colorado during a "normal" winter. If i were to hazard a guess it's that people did not believe the forcasted storm could happen in mid March, especially after days of nice weather. Nor were they familiar with the term bomb cyclone.

As you yourself noted, not even a snowplow TRUCK could traverse that mess and those drivers are trained professionals in a vehicle heavy and slow enough to travel on ice and snow.

White out blizzards leave you blind, unable to even see the end of your own vehicle much less the road in front of you.

Guess you had to see the actual blizzard because that's nothing. They don't call it the Great White North for nothing.

That reminds me of when I got stuck in the big blizzard of 1983 (?) in NYC. All the highways basically got shut-down. I (and tens of thousands of others) got stuck on the Major Deegan from about 8PM until the plows could finally push through in the early hours of the next morning. Fortunately, we had a full tank of gas, blankets and even chocolate bars in the trunk so we were merely discomfited rather than threatened (if things had become truly desperate, we could have left our cars and sought shelter in nearby buildings that were a few hundred feet away, but this was NYC in the early 80s and abandoning your car meant you weren't going to see it in one piece again ;-)

But the drive home after the plows came through had the same quiet, almost post-apocalyptic vibe.

I haven't thought of that blizzard in /years/.

I chuckled when I saw the snow plow, that driver's buddies will never let him live that down.

Think for one minute how bad it had to be that you couldn't make forward progress on a level road.
