Snooker 19 Breaks Out

Snooker 19 is now available for Windows and consoles, offering the chance to break some balls, as shown off in this launch trailer. The Windows edition is cued up on Steam, where this post notes a slight delay to the release, but this is cleared up already. Here's the announcement:
Snooker 19 features 128 of the world’s top players including Ronnie O’Sullivan, Judd Trump, Mark Selby and Ding Junhui. Players can choose a seasoned pro or a rising star and progress through the ranks in the single player career mode, playing at meticulously detailed recreations of iconic venues such as The Crucible in Sheffield, The Tempodrom in Berlin and The Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium in Beijing. As they progress through their career, players will earn trophies to commemorate their victories and gear to customise their avatar.

Players can challenge their friends to matches locally or online, where they can also matchmake against regional and global opponents. For the biggest challenge of all, players can compete in global online tournaments, synced to their real world counterparts. Winning online tournaments will earn players highly stylised cosmetics such as new cues, waistcoats and bow ties, showing anyone competing against them that they are the king of the table. The first online tournament will be the Betfred World Snooker Championship, taking place at the legendary Crucible in Sheffield from April 20th - May 6th.

“Being big fans of snooker, we’re thrilled to finally bring Snooker 19 to the masses,” said Justin Forrest of Lab42, Game Director of Snooker 19. “This has been a big passion project of ours and the chance to work with World Snooker was a dream come true. We’re confident that we have created the definitive snooker experience, and hope you will agree when you try Snooker 19 yourself.”

Leveraging the visual feature set of Unreal Engine 4, Snooker 19 sets a new visual standard for the snooker video game. Lab42 have created a custom advanced physics engine, designed from the ground up to deliver the most true to life snooker experience and an AI engine designed specifically to emulate the way different pro players approach their shots and maneuver the cue ball around the table to continue their break.

They have fantasy F1 and fantasy Golf, right? I mean they might not be on DK and FD (I have no idea) but I know those things exist. You'd be hard pressed to overestimate sports fans dedication to their preferred event.

Edit: It looks like Fantasy Golf is on DK...

Yeah but at least in golf a lot of different people win. In snooker, not so much.

Actually I was somewhat, although I admit not totally, serious on there being fantasy leagues for snooker. I'd only be surprised a small amount if they had snooker and/or other "minor" sports, say like darts. I can't imagine it would be difficult for them to create an additional league, and the more people playing, the more money they make - so, why not?

I mean, isn't the point of fantasy to create a team of your own and see if you'd do better than actual GMs out there? How would you make a 'team' from individual players and how would you measure the success of that team? Other than wins, losses and points/breaks, there's nothing really statistics-wise to work with. (I guess maybe (long) pot % and safety %).

And if you do a fantasy league with individual players, everyone and their dog picks the top 8 players and that's about it.

For any possible non-comedians here ;P, this is actually a very good simulation. They've come up with a nice way to simulate cue-action (although it's a bit involved, lot of clicking and fiddling to do a single shot, but it allows for excellent control), they have a wonderful queueing aid that may be the best I've seen yet in any game of this kind (it helps very well with simple shots, but shots that are the kind that most players would never take on are murderously tough and the aid gives very little assistance on those.)

I played one frame against Jimmy White (HI JIMMY!), made a break of 32, and won the match. The AI really isn't super tough, I mean, Jimmy would have cleared that table on me nine times over, but obviously there are not going to be many players that are making century breaks playing this, so they have to scale the difficulty down quite a bit. If you play a top 20 player, who is listed as "hard" difficulty, I'm sure you're in for a world of hurt.

The simulation feels good, balls go in the way you expect them to go. I feel it's just a tad too floaty right now, things travel a bit further than you'd expect them to, especially a bounce of the cushion seems to incur no friction whatsoever. (Though to be fair, on modern tables that often seems to be the case anyway.)

I have to say, if you like snooker, this is really the best iteration of it in a computer game I've seen yet. Best of all, it's $35. I'm very, very happy with it. Quite looking forward to playing a ton of frames.

Pegi 3 is lamest publisher ever.

Only one map, yes, but they have also announced a Battle Royale mode in addition to the standard game.

Why you always gotta be breakin my balls like that? Do I come in here and break your balls? No I got respect for your balls. But you don't respect my balls. You come in here and you break them and you just keep playing with em after that.
