Too bad GoG lost out in all this because they have the one true way but Valve and Steam have already POZZED PC gaming for a whole generation.
That Steam has many years head start is Epic's problem, not mine.
I should add: I don't hate Valve / Steam; I just think competition is a good thing.
I absolutely agree. Valve has gotten so lazy because no one has challenged them on the digital distribution front for so long that I was thrilled when a juggernaut like Epic threw their hat into the ring. I'm just so disappointed at how terrible their service is right now. Hopefully by the time they are done with the exclusivity nonsense (Which Sweeney indicated that he himself is not a fan of) they'll have gotten their shit together and I will happily use it. Especially to support indies because they won't be buried under drek the way they are on Steam and they get a bigger cut.
That's what's so disheartening about the exclusivity deals - I feel that Epic doesn't need them to become a viable alternative to Steam. First party exclusives are perfectly acceptable but 3rd party exclusives remove consumer choice from the equation- something I consider to be anti-consumer. Without exclusivity Epic still has the clout, the know-how, the userbase, the more developer-friendly terms, and the bankroll to knock Steam off its high horse. I want Steam to improve and competition is just the thing to make it happen.
