Warcraft I & II Bundle on GOG.com

A new Warcraft I & II Bundle is now available on GOG.com, offering the chance to return to the first two installments in this real-time strategy series. Like all of GOG.com's offerings, they are updated to work on modern PCs, and devoid of digital rights management. They also offer "hi-resolution support and upscaling," but both games are playable in classic form that does not include the graphics updates, but does support Battle.net matchmaking. Here's word:
In anticipation of the upcoming 25th anniversary of Warcraft, we brought you the real-time strategy classics that started it all Warcraft: Orcs and Humans and Warcraft II Battle.net Edition, including both the original Tides of Darkness and the Beyond the Dark Portal expansion. Starting today, players can once again explore these universe-defining games as they become available digitally and DRM-free for the first time ever!

Warcraft: Orcs & Humans takes players back to the original battle for Azeroth, challenging players to pick a side and raise an army of human or orcs capable of bringing ruin to their enemies. Warcraft II and its expansion take the battle to the high seas with a host of naval units, and introduces more of the races that make up the Alliance and the Horde, bolstering the human and orc forces with elves, trolls, dwarves, and more.

The first part of the legendary series plays and feels just like the original from 1994, it’s just updated to run flawlessly on modern operating systems. Warcraft II Battle.net Edition, similarly to the release of first Diablo on GOG.COM, comes in two versions, which players will choose from the launcher. The classic one allows for the authentic experience and a fully functional multiplayer with Blizzard’s Battle.net online gaming service. The updated version comes with a number of fixes to provide full compatibility with modern machines as well as hi-resolution support and upscaling.

But then why not put it on Steam?

Because Steam refuses to do ANY work with regards to making sure it works. They've literally sold old games on Steam that wouldn't even fucking run after installation.

Whereas GOG always makes sure shit runs, AND they'll give customer support on these games.

Yup. Tex Murphy Overseer is unplayable on Windows 7. People are telling potential buyers via the ratings the game is broken on Windows 7.

It is great that GOG does that, but I don't see that it is their job to make sure games work -- the dev should be doing that.

While I am all for these older Blizzard games appearing on GOG, I gotta say that I don't understand Blizzard's strategy. Why put these games on GOG and not on their own Battle.net service?

Why give a third-party a cut of the profits when you have a perfectly good storefront and can keep all the profits for yourself? Is this an admission that their own Battle.net store isn't giving them the exposure (and sales) they want? But then why not put it on Steam? I mean, I love GOG and think it is the perfect home for older games like these, but it seems an odd move for ActiBlizz.

I think for a couple of reasons.

1. Mandated by Activision to make more money with less. Blizzard has a sizable backlog of neglected titles that many generations haven't seen or experienced, so it is easy money to bring them out of the vault with little effort on their part. That nicely leads into...

2. The code is too old to work with the updated Battle.net framework. CDPR spends the money and resources to get older games they plan on selling on their platform playable on modern hardware, and with this game, in particular, they were likely all too happy to do the work to get them as exclusives. Doing that work is possibly something Blizzard did not want to commit resources to because of #1.

All in all a win-win-win for Activision-Blizzard, CDPR, and gamers.
