Epic Games Store Claims 85M Users

At a panel in the Game Developers Conference, Epic Game revealed that the Epic Games Store now has 85 million users making use of the store, according to their internal metrics. TweakTown has details from the panel, noting that Steam claims about 250 million registered users, 90 million of whom play at least monthly, and 45 million of whom play daily. They also raise questions about how many of Epic Games Stores users are just there to play Fortnite and grab free games, though its fair to note that other game stores like Steam have F2P exclusives and freebie giveaways as well. On the other hand, Epic boasts 55 million Creators, which is 65% of their user base. The article includes a PowerPoint screen from the panel with some interesting statistics, including word that 40% of Epic's users do not have Steam, which seems counterintuitive. Here are five factoids:

  • 85M Epic Games store users on PC
  • 40% do not have Steam *
  • 68% do not use Steam regularly *
(more Epic PC users regularly play on consoles than on Steam)
  • 55M Registered Creators
  • 41M players supporting Creators
    (including Fortnite across all platforms)

*Based on user surveys (August 2018, January 2019)

Am I the only one that finds Epic's, larger photos that you just scroll down through somewhat annoying? It's almost like they are trying too hard.

I prefer Steam's compact screenshot listing that you can select which photos to enlarge and the browser experience is done in sections. Beginning with photos/video at the top, scroll just a TAD down and I have features, finally ending with reviews at the bottom. The overall scrolling isn't bad though mostly because I don't have to go through large photos to get there. Not to mention all the additional information on the right side.

Steam's store IMO is still a lot better but if they wanted to and don't really have to, they can update some of the aesthetics of the website.

And? I mean so what if Steam looks just like it did ten years ago. This website looks pretty much like it did 20 years ago and I absolutely love it. Is Steam perfect? Far from it. But the simple fact its appearance hasn't changed much is not a valid complaint. Besides didn't I read somewhere Valve is about totally redo the Steam UI? I'm guessing as soon as they do people will be howling in complaint...

Have to agree that it isn't a valid complaint. Sharks, mosquitos, and Republicans have all not changed for millions of years and they seem to be just fine.

I got the joke.
Not sure what steam "look likes" has to do with any of this.
Open steam, play game.
Not once did the look of steam come into play.

Not only a bad joke, but also not valid as many politicians (Rs are upfront recently, but the Ds have done it too) change their positions nearly as much as live goldfish flops when tossed onto a table.

Yeah, I see a lot of stats that got rolled into this from all the non
pc gamers that started playing Fortnite over the last year or 2. Doesnt really count as a win for the store. I'd rather see the stats to date since the announcement of the store. Epic needs to make their store better instead of trying to have a dick measuring contest with the undisputed champion of games distribution.

That said I've used the Epic store for a game or 2 and it's ok. 5/10

Yes, but those same people don't know what win98 looks like, either. It's literally a login prompt. Something people have on desktops and mobile.

How many of those users are brand loyal to the Epic Game Store meaning if they had a choice to buy from any store they would choose Epic's?

THIS is the real clincher. I bought Satisfactory because...well, it’s fucking awesome. But given a choice, would I buy a game on Epic over Steam? Probably not, because my main game library is on there.

But if I was brand new to PC gaming, Epic’s store looks more ...up to date. Steam still looks the same as it did 10 years ago. Ignore, for a moment, that the Epic store has 1/20tg the features Steam has. Without knowing that AHEAD of time, it’d be hard to pick Steam over Epic. The first moments are clearly “better” on Epic, if only because the login prompt doesn’t look like a discolored win98 login.

I could see people legitimately choosing to purchase on epic’s store. Just probably not people who actually use Steam regularly.
