Out of the Blue

I'm terribly sad to share the news that we lost the Gunnar-man in the early hours of this morning. I'm sorry to burden you, but I do want thank you all for sharing in the joy he brought us for all these years.

Our visit to the vet yesterday revealed the sudden downturn he experienced Thursday was because he had masses on both his prostate and his spleen. This seemed pretty dire, and I expressed a determination to not cause him undue suffering, but the doctor was of the opinion we should try and treat his prostate for a couple of weeks, and if that could be brought in line, we could consider a biopsy of the growth on his spleen and a possible splenectomy. But his condition was far worse after we got home, as he showed increasing signs of discomfort, and he was even having trouble just walking. So we went to bed pretty convinced that, barring a miraculous turnaround, we would euthanize him today. But we awoke to find he died in his sleep, going out much the way he lived, on his own terms.

Our wonderful poodle was a blessing to us every day for 14-⅓ years. This works out to well over one-hundred by the old dog-years rule-of-thumb. That is not an exact science, but gives some perspective on his good run. And it was indeed an excellent one, as aside from his recent bout with giardia, and his last two days of suffering, he had a lifetime of almost perfect health. He was also one of the happiest creatures I've ever met, and he had an amazing collection of friends of both the two-legged and four-legged varieties. This was part of his brilliant second act, as he emerged from the shadow of Hudson the wonder dog after she passed and took over her role as mayor of the neighborhood.

It was a real privilege to be his owner, and his loss leaves a giant hole in our hearts that will be tough to fill.

I'm so sorry to hear the news.
please have my belated sympathies.

I have never been much of a poster but i have been visiting for years. ( I always love your out of the blue posts and little blurbs about your real life stuff)
back in the day i remember furiously refreshing the site to get an update about an Unreal Tournament demo release and got a call my second daughter was being born. there was no point to that other than being a Bluesnews memory :-)

when I started reading the site I wasn't a dog person, throughout the years i have read about Gunnar man and even ended up getting my own dog.

Thanks for all the years of news and general awesomeness...
from some random guy in Canada that still uses this site as my main gaming news site.

After all the years (23?) reading this page, some of the worst news. My sincerest condolences for your loss, and my sincerest joy at the time you got to spend with Gunnar. It's never over but only a pause until you are reunited in the Great Beyond and can run in that place where we never tire but run upwards and onwards forever. Thanks for all that you do

Condolences.. It's never easy to lose a loved pet, but you never forget the happiness you brought them and they brought you:)

14 1/2 years is a glorious amount of time for a pooch.

Condolences. It is always difficult to put a pet down, but letting them suffer is worse. 14.5 years is definitely a good long life for a dog.

"You know how much you love, respect and want to protect every dog and cat in the world? You know how much your heart breaks when you see a picture of a dog in a shelter who is going to be killed? You know how you feel when you see photos of piles of dead dogs and cats who are going to be used for fur? You know how enraged you get when you see a photo of a dog or cat who has been beaten to death? That’s how vegans feel about all animals. Every animal who is exploited and murdered for food, clothing, entertainment and “research.” We don’t distinguish between dogs and cats and other animals. If you allowed yourself to feel the deep suffering that billions of animals endure for your pleasure, you’d be vegan, too. And you might understand why vegans work so hard to end the animal holocaust." —Gary Smith

I'm so sorry for your loss Blue. I've been around since this was Redwood and a Quake only website. I recall when you got Gunner and have enjoyed all your talk about him over the years. I just lost my 15 year old Cat Luna on Friday. She had been in bad shape all week and when I got home from work Friday it was as if she held on all day just to get to see me one last time. She died in my arms just an hour after I got home. I know the pain you feel all to well right now. The blessing in it all is the wonderful life we gave them and they in turn gave back to us. The love of our little ones will live on in our memories long after the pain of their loss

My sympathies. Pets become family: we invest time, care, share experiences, learn their personalities, and create memories together. It's always heartbreaking when our journeys together end...
