Valve Layoffs

Upload VR reports that Valve Corporation has laid off 13 full-time employees and terminated some contractor agreements as well (thanks VNN). They say these lost jobs are centered on the hardware and virtual reality side of the business, and offer research from the company website and LinkedIn as support. They also discuss previously leaked information about Valve's plans to release a new VR headset of their own, and speculate about whether these plans will change, noting that Valve continues to hire VR-related staff. They have an official confirmation of the departures, though Valve does not go into any of the speculation about what roles the affected workers served. Here's word:
Last month, 13 full time employees were let go and a portion of our contractor agreements were terminated. It’s an unfortunate part of business, but does not represent any major changes at the company. We thank those affected for their contribution and wish them well in future endeavors.

This is in spite of a certain segment of the population who seem to be cheering for its demise.
This is only a reaction to the frantic and delusional hype which made VR THE NEXT BIG THING. No, VR is not the next big thing. It's only a very useful and capable tool for specific purposes and NOT the upcoming entertainment juggernaut it was supposed to be, according to a lot of marketeers and fan boys, who believed in this hype.
