Out of the Blue

We got warnings about a winter storm set to hit this area late yesterday. That was a severe exaggeration, as I awoke to find a dusting of snow that was analogous to the layer of sugar on a powdered donut. It was all so mild that I threw on my boots and coat and shoveled it all in my New York Giants pajama pants. It's always nice to show the neighbors that you are both a responsible homeowner and a loyal football fan.

Read again. Those grain filters are tied to bad quality. Alien already has a grain filter in 1080p.
Ah, okay so you are referring specifically to Alien. Fine. Excuse me for what is possibly a stupid question. Is that something done at the time of filming? If so, yeah -- then the original film stock would be "corrupted".

I have Aliens on BRD, and the film grain is readily apparent. I assumed that's simply because it was shot on film, and a lot of it in the dark, so they were using a higher ISO film stock, which is naturally grainy.

Pretty much all 4K "remastered" movies will look exactly the same as 1080p.
Well, it depends really... if the original film stock is available and the film was shot on 65 mm, a restoration and conversion to 4k could be excellent -- for instance, as was done with "Lawrence of Arabia" which is a fantastic 4k remaster. That said, Alien was shot on 35 mm which as I understand it, is pretty much right at the border of equivalency with 4k. So the quality of the conversion to 4k will probably depend on the quality of the original film stock.
The only reason those grain filters exist is because the remastered versions differ a lot to newly recorded HD ones. They try to hide that difference with those filters.
So, no.
Watch Better Call Saul (sorry, best example I know) for example and compare it to remastered stuff. The difference is massive. BCS doesnt use those filters and looks absolutely brilliant.
I'm confused. You quoted me and then talk about grain filters, which I didn't mention and say, "So, no." What are you saying no to?

Or unless you have a TV 55/65+ inches, in which case, you'll easily see the difference. These movies were shot on 35mm (or 70, in some cases) - the detail is there. They were shot that way to be projected on gigantic screens, so a bigger TV, of course you will see the difference.

To suggest otherwise is simply wrong.

I remastered Origin's Ultima VII Routine and Function declarations development document from 1991 for fun and giggles! Check it out if you like.

Update: Currated in bonus code I found from other sources and extrapolated the Parameter(s), Function, and Returns from the code.

Fine, I guess you have to milk where you can.
But what I do not understand is that even some new movies or series use that abomination of a filter...

Well we got dumped on big time yesterday. Snowed all day well into the night. At least it was the really light, fluffy stuff that made shoveling it a breeze.

Edit: Good news is Environment Canada is calling for an early spring. They say in about 2 more weeks it should turn on a dime and we'll be into nice spring weather. The classic March coming in like a lion and going out like a lamb. Fingers crossed.

Dark Phoenix looks much closer to the source than X-Men 3 but it's too bad there's no Imperial Guard battle on the moon. That was my favorite part of the original story.
