Anthem Released

Electronic Arts announces today is the official launch day for Anthem, saying the multiplayer action/RPG is now available for Windows, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. This follows a week of exclusive access for Origin Insiders, and EA has also detailed the contents of a day one patch for the game. A post on Eurogamer has tips for new players. Here's the previously released launch trailer and here's the release announcement:

Today Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: EA) and BioWare officially launched Anthem™, inviting players to don their javelins and fully immerse themselves in this brand-new world as a team of four. Players take on the role of Freelancers, and will work together to unleash their power with amazing abilities and coordinated teamwork, utilizing each javelin’s unique strengths to build a formidable team.

“I feel remarkably similar to when we launched the original Mass Effect trilogy,” said Casey Hudson, General Manager of BioWare. “I’m excited, anxious and incredibly proud of what our team has accomplished. I sincerely hope our players enjoy what we have created, and I look forward to the countless stories we’ll tell in the world of Anthem in the weeks and months to come.”

Anthem also delivers amazing characters and deep lore that allows players to immerse themselves in the world and embrace its mysteries, as well as regular new content that will change the world and keep the experience fresh and new. In the game, players will square off against the nefarious Monitor, the leader of the militaristic Dominion who seeks to bend the very powers of creation and destruction to his will. The Freelancers must thwart the Monitor’s schemes to control the Anthem of Creation, or else he could tear the entire world apart and plunge the planet into ultimate chaos.

Launch is just the beginning for Anthem, as the game will continue to grow and evolve through free live service content updates. Over the next 90 days alone the game will deliver new missions, new rewards, a new stronghold and more. Perhaps the most noteworthy inclusion will be the introduction of the first Cataclysm, a world-changing event that will bring with it an entirely new experience. During the course of the game’s life new stories, characters and villains will emerge and players will be treated to ongoing excitement and conflicts.

Ugh, reading the Reddit forums and some reviews, this feels like yet another game where they would have had a far better product if they had just emailed me for feedback, then paid my (rather hefty) consultant's fee.

"Should we make a future Iron Man/Power Suit game with no beam weapons, side from one shitty colossus one?" A: Nope. Put in lasers.

"Should we have a flying game with almost no flying enemies?" A: Nope. Make some flying guys for at least one faction, maybe all factions.

"Should weapons and items spawn with ANY possible affix, like version 1.0 Diablo 3?" A: Nope, that would be hilariously stupid. Some people will get god level guns, some people get the same gun that is worthless.

etc. etc.

I feel like companies are almost deliberately trying to sink coop PvE games for some reason.

Response from EA:

"Thank you for your feedback. We have directed your questions to our marketing department who have these responses:

"Should we make a future Iron Man/Power Suit game with no beam weapons, side from one shitty colossus one?" A: Nope. Put in lasers.
We have lasers planned for a future paid DLC.

Thank you for your interest in EA games."

Well, reviews said it's flawed and "meh". I wasn't expecting anything else after the trial.

Combat's fun enough, makes you feel powerful. But yeah, it's super buggy. It definitely needs at least a few months of polish. Lots of potential, though, if they can flesh out their systems.

It was free with my 2080Ti so no big deal if it's crap. I've played through the tutorial, though I had tried the Alpha and Beta. It's alright, but doesn't seem like it has a lot to retain my attention for long.

Spike in concurrent Warframe players in 3... 2...

Well yeah, but because Warframe is one of those games that is routinely played more on weekends than weekdays. Otherwise, they only have big spikes after a major update.
