Paradox and Microsoft Launch Paradox Mods

Paradox Interactive announces a partnership with Microsoft to launch Paradox Mods, which they call an "independent" modding platform for PC and Xbox One. This kicks off with cross-platform support for more than 30 mods for Surviving Mars, and word is to expect support for more Paradox titles later this year. This also comes with an update for Surviving Mars which adds mouse and keyboard support to the Xbox One edition. Word is: "Paradox Mods is the first direct pipeline modders have to publish their work on consoles. Featuring in-game and web interfaces that enable easy distribution, Paradox Mods allows mod creators to submit their creation once and have it made available on every platform -- no extra steps required." Here's more:
Paradox Interactive announced today that it has joined forces with Microsoft to bring Paradox Mods, the first-ever open modding platform that enables distribution of user-created game modifications (mods) across multiple platforms, to Xbox One and is now available as a free update to survival-strategy game Surviving Mars. With Paradox Mods, mod creators can easily share their work with players on Xbox One and PC (using GoG or the Paradox Launcher) with a single upload. While Surviving Mars is the first to utilize Paradox Mods, support for other Paradox titles is planned to come later this year. Check out what’s available on Paradox Mods here: https://mods.paradoxplaza.com/

For Players:
Launching with over 30 mods tested and ready for console players for Surviving Mars, Paradox Mods includes projects from recognized creators within the modding community such as Silva and ChoGGi. Players now have even more ways to enjoy the survival strategy sim whether it’s adding a self-sufficient Forest Greenhouse or building a Martian Car Wash. Simply log into your Paradox Account from the Surviving Mars title screen, open the “Mod Manager” at the bottom of the screen to browse the mods catalogue, then select mods that you want to play and the game will automatically download and add them to your playing experience.

For Modders:
Paradox Mods is the first direct pipeline modders have to publish their work on consoles. Featuring in-game and web interfaces that enable easy distribution, Paradox Mods allows mod creators to submit their creation once and have it made available on every platform -- no extra steps required.

“Modding has been, and remains an important part of the Paradox community. As we have diversified the way we distribute our games, we want to make sure all our players can take part in the creation process,” said Anders Törlind, Product Owner for Paradox Mods. “For Surviving Mars, we have worked with mod creators to support Paradox Mods with some of the best mods available, all in one place and downloadable in-game or simply using a web browser. We really look forward to unlocking the world of modding for all members of our community, regardless of what system they are using to play our games.”

Thanks for visitor and/or sharing on ModDB! It's been a labour of love for a long long time now.

I remember when I used to pitch BluesNews new mods back in 2002 and was always overjoyed when we got coverage, I'm a perpetual lurker

Modding has changed a lot since I got my start in 2002. It's mostly cosmetic now and less about total conversions, which appeals way more to kids. But for us older gamers there are always those gems that just makes everything worthwhile.

I'm as passionate as ever, and believe the golden age of modding is only just getting started

This is the hugest failboat ever

Only mods you can add there are for Stellaris which is already questionable without a DLC check for stuff. Because that is a huge issue in Stellaris modding. In fact it's already an issue in Workshop modding, because the version doesn't tell you jack shit with Stellaris if you mod it. You can easily unlock all the "DLC" as a modder by the way, even by accident.

Surviving Mars -> Ingame only # which means only statistic mods with minimal lua changes (the game isn't really moddable) so yeah. Havn't actually seen a single mod for that game that I grabbed, and the moment I saw how messy adding new models is I gave up. Not a game with a lot of staying power for me anyway.

Cities Skylines -> Upload disabled
So basically, they are adding Skylines mods themselves, great. That means you won't see ANY actually good asset in there because most good assets have existing buildings as base, which they can't use because of copyright.

Also they can only add Skylines mod there after asking, because everyone made an agreement with Steam, not with Paradox. Paradox does NOT own any mod on the steam workshop.

So as a modder, I say, lmao. Great that consoles get mods, not so great how this is done, though I understand why Skylines has moderated mods (as in, assets) only. This does not replace the Nexus in any way. But it is a nice thing that consoles get mods

As the creator of ModDB, this news is great. For a long time i've felt that the profound impact modding has had on me needs to reach more gamers on console, mobile and elsewhere.

More modding platforms are needed to aide with accessibility, we are actually working on mod.io, an open mod API - to help developers move in this direction and make mods installable in-game with a click. Great validation for us

This is NOT what I expected to read here. Very interesting! Thanks for your work on ModDB!

That would be really cool. Some of my best experiences in games have been mods. I don't have as much time to game as I used to, but have dozens of hours in the Captain's Mod for FTL.

My son is a mod freak. He won't even play vanilla games any longer. It takes Cortex Command 5 minutes to load because he has 150 mods loaded. He starts BeamNG Drive and Besiege to load plane mods to fly around the map. And don't even get me started on Minecraft.

When it comes to their almighty console , it probably will work pretty good.
- Just a shame they still haven't figured out how to do anything right on PC , you know, despite re-re-re-focusing on PC games again.

Yay, now besides exclusive stores we're going to have exclusive mod portals? (I don't actually know whether it'll be exclusive, but let's be cynical and say it'll go that way.)

Do we NEED more mod portals? What mods do moddb, nexus and steam workshop not cater to? So yes, in regard to those gamers, another mod portal is useful.

Moddb, nexus, and steam workshop don't mean anything for Xbox One users since they can't use it.

select mods that you want to play and the game will automatically download and add them to your playing experience.

Hahahaha. This is being powered by Microsoft, right? Hahahaha. Yeah, I'm sure it'll work that seamlessly. Rolleyes

How many Microsoft accounts will we need to log into for this?

Everyone likes to bad-mouth Microsoft, but I've had no problems with Play Anywhere and downloading games to my Xbox One using their Game Pass phone app (and I've only ever needed one account).

Mods are pretty essential to Paradox games, not surprised to see them expand modding to consoles.
Do you have a single fact to back that up?
