Apex Legends Boasts 10M Players; 1M Concurrent

A Message from Vince Zampella has word from the Respawn boss on how Apex Legends is performing like a boss since the launch of this battle royale Titanfall spinoff a few days ago. Word is that just 72 hours after the launch of the free-to-play game over 10 million players have played, and the game has peaked at over one million concurrent players:

In 72 hours, over 10 million players have jumped into Apex Legends and weve breached 1 million concurrent players!

This has been a truly incredible journey. We tested and tweaked. We argued and agreed. We got to a point where we felt some magic. We knew it would be risky to take the franchise in this direction, to go free to play, and do a surprise launch. But we fell in love with Apex Legends and wanted, needed, other people to play it too.

We hoped youd love it as much as us, but never in our wildest dreams could we have expected the outpouring of support and positivity weve seen. From all of us at Respawn, thank you for giving us and Apex Legends a chance. Thank you for joining us on this journey. This is just the beginning! We have so much more in store for you this year.

As of right now on Twitch Apex is killing it with 235k viewers...poor Fortnite dropped to 107k viewers....Ninja be worried dude...

Same thing happened when Blackout was released, where is it now?

Doubt Fortnite has much to worry about, as it has actual has depth and a high skill ceiling, with the unique building mechanic leading to dynamic plays that keep people entertained.

What does Apex have? Just the same sh*t we've seen in the yearly COD instalment for the past 20 years..

Ok, I tried it, and honestly it feels just like COD Blackout, complete with clunky combat, tedious looting where everyone runs and slides around at super human speed. Classes seems like a gimmick more than anything unique or impactful.

Doubt it's going to have much staying power, it just seems to be your shallow, generic shooter where all that matter is your aim.

That said, if it keeps the kids out of Fortnite that's a positive... though I guess most of them would be migrating from COD anyway.

Meh.

APEX is the best thing that could have happened to Anthem. They will be getting millions of users in their launcher/ecosystem where anthem will be prominently advertised. It's really not a competitive game to Anthem IMO, as there is a lot of crossover for FPS fans to want a more Destiny-type experience. If anything I think Apex will help Anthem sales.

Well the game is free so...

Nah man, that was my feeling too when they were boasting about a million people trying it, but a million playing at once is pretty impressive. The only question left is regarding staying power, will they be able to retain numbers like that once the EA marketing machine moves on to their next in line and the hype dies down?

What are you talking about? What marketing machine? The game was announced like one day before it was released. There was 0 marketing. All the hype is generated post-launch, usually by the players themselves and simple word of mouth. This is how games used to be made, way back in the early 90s.

Lmao.. How do you think people heard of the announcement livestream? EA has been tweeting more about this game for the past week than everything else combined, to their 5 million+ followers. Their name alone ensures every news outlet on the internet will post something about a new game when the press release comes across their desk (you don't see indies getting their gameplay trailer on somewhere like MSN.com). And as mentioned, they paid the most popular streamer on Twitch what I'm sure was a good amount of money to play this instead of the game he's earned his fortune and following from. I saw a full-page roadblock ad on Origin the first time I loaded it up this week, and it's been front and center on the PlayStation Store, probably Xbox, too..

Just because they didn't buy a Super Bowl ad for it, that doesn't mean the game hasn't benefited greatly from their influence in the industry. The machine still runs, still dwarfs anything a developer from the '90s could ever dream of, even when it's not at full capacity. Zampella is pretty popular for an individual dev, but he doesn't have the reach or the money to make a surprise launch work so well on his own.

I may have used a bit of hyperbole but dropping hints on twitter about a super secret game in development may as well be 0 marketing compared to what they've been doing for Anthem for example.

I for one heard about Apex exactly a day before launch. And that only by accident btw. Compare that to Anthem which I've been hearing about for over a year now, Im already sick to death of, and haven't even played yet.

Also paying a few streamers to play their new game which actually, wait for it, WORKED on LAUNCH (OMG, was that real??) is peanuts, compared to what EA or any other big name publisher spends on marketing for months prior, during and after a game's release.

EA oddly enough seems to be not doing anything with it really. It doesn't even show up on the store front most of the time and it doesn't have it's own section like every other game does on the Store -> Browse Games fly out menu. I don't think it will be that way for long, but it almost seems movie studio-esque when they're trying to tank their own movie for whatever reason. I suppose they'd rather steer you to $80 and $60 dollar Anthem for now.

They are probably looking at Apex as it own entity and if successful sell of EA. Half serious.

@jacobvandy people play games because they are fun, not because of marketing. marketing helps fun games get played, so maybe sometimes it was necessary but not sufficient for success, but it can't make people play unfun games. lack of marketing can't make a game fun or unfun. lack of fun doesn't mean there was or wasn't marketing or success. and presence of fun doesn't mean there was or wasn't marketing or success. I know this is really complicated, but basically people go back to play apex after the first try because they think it's fun, and EA stopping marketing won't change how fun it is. this is all much ado about nothing though isn't it

Apex is amazing. I didn't like PUBG. Mostly because it ran like a pregnant yak on my highish system. Fornite for me ranks near one of dumbest games I've ever played. 10 year olds everywhere and that awful building mechanic. It's just a confused mess in my opinion. Apex is pure AAA with lots of polish. Straight forward goals, point and shoot, interesting take on moba QWER abilities, great gun play, great map design. It's the best take on BR in my opinion. I'm happy to play it again even when we just got smoked from the jump.

I don't think it's odd. It's probably a conscious decision to "spring" this game out of nowhere. Someone smart enough but placed high enough at EA had the bright idea that maybe just maybe they could release a game that can draw the players in on it's own merit instead of spending tens of millions of dollars on a marketing budget. Advertising works, sort of, but it helps a shitton if you have a quality product.

Im not saying that Apex Legends is an exceptional or even a great game, but it has a few things going for it. It's a BR which is all the rage, it's free to play but has AAA production values, it was made in cooperation and with help of a few major FPS game streamers, and most importantly it's NOT shit.

In some ways it's the antithesis of Anthem. Depending on how Anthem does when it comes out hopefully this starts a trend with other publishers, a return to the philosophy of how games used to be made.

Respawn was very clear into why they decided to "spring" this out of nowhere. A free to play Titanfall battle royale game without Titanfall elements would have triggered a huge outrage farm from gamers, and resulted in hugely downvoted YouTube videos, review bombing, huge debates about lootboxes and how greedy EA was, etc.

They wanted none of it, so they figured the best way to avoid a few months of simmering anger was to basically just drop the game out of nowhere, so people would judge it for what it is, rather than for the deepening outrage and anger forums and subreddits would be generating as people tried to top each other for who could be the most annoyed at this before even trying it.

They're pretty lucky it's good, though, as this would seem stupidly hollow had it not been.

I'm with Mordi. REALLY enjoying the class based characters and with a event MEH team you can really have some great moments with the squad diversity.
You do have SOME bullet sponge'ness but that's the same with every battle royal game due to armor/shields but overall the gunplay is VERY nice.
The Squad Drop system is fucking brilliant.

Overall besides more tactical BR's this is the top of my list (AND IT'S FREE).
