Apex Legends Hits 1M Players Right Off

Vince Zampella tweets about the success of yesterday's launch of Apex Legends. Word is the free-to-play battle royale hit the one million player threshold within the first eight hours of its launch: "I’m so overwhelmed right now, @PlayApex broke a million unique players in under 8 hours. ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you so much for showing up and being part of this with @Respawn you are amazing!!" There's also a post on reddit where Respawn recaps the launch. Word is to expect a small server patch this morning to address stability issues. They are also soliciting feedback:

The support and excitement for Apex Legends has been more than we could have imagined. The whole team is thrilled to see people loving the game as much as we do. We love the praise, but we also want to hear what could be better. A few things for example we’d love your feedback on:

  • How do weapons feel? Distinct? Samey?
  • Do Legend abilities feel effective?
  • Are you finding loot quickly enough? Is ammo too hard to find? Is a type of ammo feel to scarce?
  • What areas of the game could be explained better?
  • What do you wish Apex had that it doesn’t
  • What are your favorite cosmetics?

That was my thought exactly, but I predict it will last more than a week and dissipate in a market already becoming saturated with these types of games.

Weird thing is, they will probably make more money selling little cosmetics than trying to pry $60 up front sale for the game....


..and get some illegal money laundering running thru will help also - ALA' EPIC/ Fortnite style.

Tried it for kicks. The three party random PUB mode will kill it. You NEED to have at least 2 other friends to have fun with this.

It's very team based, and getting stuck with a team that doesn't use voice, or are retarded in some obvious way is basically game over.

User rate will drop off drastically simply because of this one thing. I sure as hell won't play it again without a couple of friends on my team.

With that said, the basic underlying gameplay is smooth, slick and could be quite a bit of fun. Wish PUBG ran as good as this, or had these production values.

I had immense trouble seeing players, especially in ADS, versus other BRs (PUBG/Blackout). It also feels really slow paced despite all the powers, grappling, climbing etc.. and no wall running in a titanfall game!?

I played it a bit last night. Won one of my games because my team had a beast on it.

What I like:
* New Battle Royale Mechanics!
* Drop system is superior to other BR offerings (leader-led drops preventing that one dumbass that always seems to drop away from the rest of your team)
* Rez/Respawn Mechanic Points where you trade in your dead buddies badge adds a new strategic facet to the game play
* Gun play feels the best out of all the BR games
* Unique classes makes things more interesting and encourages team play with your randoms

And the aesthetic in general is great, feels very hunger games. The random announcements for new kill leaders, when the previous match champion gets taken out, how announcements are made in the arena in general. And I love the little touches like showing random players stats with their portrait on the big banner screens throughout the play field.

I am really enjoying the game so far. Have about 15 matches in, playing solo (going to play with friends tonight) and getting matched with pubs so far hasn't been the worst thing in the world... yet.

It's actually pretty good but there's no titans or wall running... that really would have separated itself from other battle royale games.

i've been watching some twitch streams and so far it seems much more interesting to play than most the other big games in the genre. The map is a bit smaller, which means fire-fights are common. There are cool weapons, consumables, class abilities. The mechanics look very solid.

It's probably the first game I've seen of this genre that doesn't boil down to long stretches of nothing happening or 'who can build walls faster and snipe everyone else from 300 yards away'.

The really puzzling thing here is Respawn launching this when Anthem is only a week or two away. I guess they are a wholly owned subsidiary or perhaps EA just deemed it different markets but I can't help feel like there's some overlap.

Here is what I can't (or won't) get over...the thing that made Titanfall unique, and even fun, was mechs. So here they are, launching a new game in the franchise in an extremely competitive genre and they leave the one thing that makes the franchise unique out of the game? What am I missing?

Oh, it very well might be, and two months from now they may have 5 million people playing it. But we've been through the "OMG WE GOT A MILLION PEOPLE ON DAY ONE WE'RE THE NEXT BEST THING TO SLICED BREAD!" hype before, and a month later nobody is playing that shit anymore.
