Epic Games Store Adding Opt-in Review System

Responding to the accusation that the Epic Games Store is "trying to silence consumers" by not hosting user reviews, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney tweets that they are planning on introducing an opt-in review system (thanks GamesIndustry.biz). Here's his reasoning:
We’re working on a review system for the Epic Games store based on the existing one in the Unreal Engine marketplace. It will be opt-in by developers. We think this is best because review bombing and other gaming-the-system is a real problem.

I think Steam did it somewhat well. Show a notice/warning if it appears to be receiving a review bomb. Outside of a bomb, the reviews aren't perfect, but they're better than nothing. I sure as shit won't trust a game without any reviews at all.

Because no one else on the Internet is allowed to post reviews somewhere else? Oh wait, they are. Epic is not obligated to provide a place to air grievances or praise for that matter.

That's fine, we're also not obligated to use their service.

Sure, but if they want to actually compete with Steam, they need to offer a competitive feature set. User reviews are a big feature and if publishers/developers can simply opt out, that seriously undermines the feature.

Easy. If the publisher opts out of reviews, don't buy the game. It is a clear sign that the publisher does not believe in his products, so neither should you. Problem solved.

Or it's a clear sign that the publisher doesn't feel they have the appropriate moderation tools or derive sufficient value from the review system provided to them. It's the same reason why so many websites have started disabling their comments sections or have heavily started restricting them.

It really gets old hearing this chestnut -- free speech / censorship doesn't apply to the private sector, only to the government, or in certain other limited situations, etc.

This is not a free speech issue, and quite frankly, I fully agree with Epic's position on this. Epic is not obligated to provide you with a place to air your grievances, you're free to use your own methods to do that.

If your statistic of 99% was actually true then your point would be stronger. I doubt it's very accurate.

I'd rather have the Steam review system than not because I can do what I always do. I read some of the 5 star ratings. I read some of the 1 stars. Maybe read some of the 3 stars. And then I can make an informed decision.

I think Doom 3 was of excellent quality. It's id software. But the game just wasn't all that fun to me. And the "fun factor" of a game falls under a different category other than quality.

I don't trust reviews from users I don't know because 99% of gamers are fragile, offended morons that either are 14 or just always act like it. User reviews are full of weird entitlements and petty bullshit.

It's easy to tell the quality of a game without them. Again, last game who's poor quality surprised me was Doom 3. And I never read steam reviews or metacritic user scores.

Opinion: Even with all its issues, Steam's review system is the best review system there ever was.

The excuse Tim gives for not forcing reviews is total BS. Reviews should be on at all times. Other than that, I'm full in with Epic store, but I won't get into that AGAIN.

I thought Sweeny was a pretty stand up guy until this Epic Game Store debacle. Afaik, he literally caused the review bomb by bribing a publisher to break deal with a competitor two weeks before release.

People will just go to Reddit or elsewhere to do reviews. Steam tried to keep them in house and did as good a job, as any other handling the review system. As an example... through all this bullshit, notice no one is offering a better store system and certainly not on the whole.
