Metro Exodus an Epic Store Exclusive - What This Means for Steam Preorders

An announcement from Deep Silver on Steam reveals that Metro Exodus will be a timed exclusive for the Epic Games Store until February 14, 2020, one year after the planned February 15, 2019 release of 4A Games' first-person shooter sequel. The wrinkle with this plan is that Metro Exodus remains available for pre-purchase on Steam for the moment, and has already been preordered there by a number of customers. Preorders will end at some point today, but word is everyone that they will receive their game as expected. This is not preventing Valve from complaining about this, as they say: "We think the decision to remove the game is unfair to Steam customers, especially after a long pre-sale period. We apologize to Steam customers that were expecting it to be available for sale through the February 15th release date, but we were only recently informed of the decision and given limited time to let everyone know." Here's Deep Silver's take on the topic:
Epic Games and Deep Silver today announced a partnership that will see the digitally-distributed PC version of the highly anticipated Metro Exodus release on February 15th 2019 solely through the Epic Games store.

The ability to purchase / pre-order from Steam will soon be removed

However, any customer with an outstanding pre-order for Metro Exodus on PC through Steam will receive their game as expected.

For more information, please view our FAQ below :

I already pre-ordered Metro Exodus on Steam. What happens to my order?
Your pre-order on Steam will be honored, and you will be able to download and play Metro Exodus on release day (15th February 2019).

If I pre-ordered the Gold Edition on Steam, will I still get my future Expansion Pass on Steam?
Yes, your Expansion Pack content will become available for download via Steam, when released.

Will I still get my pre-order bonuses - the Digital Artbook and Official Soundtrack on Steam?
Yes, your pre-order bonuses will be honored and delivered by Steam.

I ordered the Standard Edition - will I be able to purchase the Expansion Pass in the future on Steam?
Yes, if you own the Standard Edition on Steam, you will be able to purchase the Expansion Pass or standalone DLC on Steam when it releases in the future.

Does the Epic Store have any exclusive or timed exclusive DLC?
No. All future DLC for Metro Exodus will be released simultaneously on all platforms.

Are there any differences in content between the version on the Epic Games store and the version on Steam?
No, they have the same pre-order bonuses and in-game content. All future title updates, patches, and free and premium DLC will be released simultaneously across both versions.

Will Metro Exodus ever return to Steam?
Yes - Metro Exodus will return to Steam and on other store fronts after 14th February 2020.

They actually still have money coming in. Their problem is more that they squandered all their money because of a "visionary" CEO that turned out to be more of a dud CEO. Expensive secondary HQ's in places like LA, heavy investment in VR that didn't pan out. Buying up studios that were weird choices (like the one making a semi competitor to payday) and then releasing that game themselves, etc. Basically the dude had money coming out of his ears and burning a hole in his pocket and rushed to spend it everywhere in things that weren't their core competency, and spread themselves too thin.

Almost a little like star citizen. Except in that case, they still have tons of people throwing wallets at them so they are going to survive for a while more. If that stops at any point, then they are only a few months away from bankruptcy at their burn rate. If that income continues until release, we might get a game. Not sure if it will be a good game though.

You're not entirely wrong. Like I said in that thread, there was so much hubris from the CEO, and while his diversification efforts weren't necessarily bad ideas (they mostly were bad ideas, but not necessarily so), they were ideas bigger than his company. He needed more dependable revenue in their core business. The money coming out his ears was somewhat earned, and also equally much borrowed, which is a problem. And the games he invested in seemed less a good investment and more sharing the wealth with buddies.

You're right, though, they had income coming in, in the form of Payday 2. That's a luxury that 4A doesn't have, meaning 4A is even more vulnerable to a one game failure. I highly doubt they have enough reserves to keep going if they have a true flop, like Overkill's The Walking Dead was.

I had that happen a few years back, it was a big pain in the ass to recover accounts including Google, Origin, and Steam (easiest of the bunch). Everything works in steam (exept during the holiday periods) - send invite to friend - play.

Easy to backup game library, move to another drive etc.

Easy to purchase and gift games, add to wishlists etc.

Easy to change download locations, set download limits, set priorities, turn off downloads during gametime, override limits, pause updates on specific games etc..

Lots of details about games, including whether they are co-op etc.

Web version is also available.

Store has a decent layout, review system is easy to see at a glance, search has heaps of options and works well, browsing games is quick.

Lots of community forums, discussions and mods.

Try doing that on Ubishit, Origin, or the beyond terrible MS store (no really, what a steaming piece of sh*t).

I haven't purchased anything on GOG or Epic's store as i've never had the need. However, i had a quick look at Epic's store yesterday to see the price of Ashen and the details were extremely lacking.

In an ideal world all games would be available on all stores with the only difference being the price, and i'd happily pay more to play games using a store that's doesn't waste my time, and that actually works.

Yup. you have a good list. Epic is lacking a lot. But to everyone angry, Epic is trying to build it. In order to build it, they need time and money. In order to have money, they need to sell things. The only advantage they have to offer is higher publisher revenue, and potential exclusives. So they're doing what it takes to get a critical mass of users that warrants more investment.

They could have just invested in a true Steam competitor now. Except Steam has a 15ish year lead, which is very hard to compete against. It also has billions in annual revenue, and therefore the type of dev team that affords. It would be a huge, huge investment to build something to compete with that (which is why no one has.) Epic is trying to do it, but can't do it overnight, and wants revenue to prove it, and help fund it, instead of dropping a few hundred million into a Steam competitor that could die overnight.

If you have the choice between Steam and Epic, it's kind of a no-brainer today. So Epic is removing that choice in some places, to get the users it needs to prove that there's even a point in competing with Steam.

And while, yeah, I get being annoyed, I just don't get people who went from "I was so excited for this, but now it's on Epic and not Steam and I won't buy it unless it's super discounted." Just seems to hurt yourself by helping ensure no future Metro games. Unless you need some of the things marked "No" here, why care?

Some people think exclusives will be the future. Possibly. Not sure why it really matters, Steam prices are set by publishers, so it isn't like something being on Steam and on Epic means we'll have a lower price - prices lower when the publisher decides, and the publisher will guaranteed keep price parity across platforms. Also, the reason we have an exclusive is because Epic has exactly one card to play, so they're playing it. Once they're closer to feature parity, they'll have more cards to play, and will be less interested in playing the one-time use card that costs them a good chunk of cash.

I'll just buy it on epic and then add a steam shortcut for it like I do with every other game I buy that's not on steam. Store launcher's and drm... it's just not a big deal to me anymore. I still buy the drm free version whenever one is available and isn't crippled featurewise, but beyond that...

True. Basically I use a password add-on and then export it from time to time. But lets expand our mind here a little, so we are talking "we don't like logins for all these damn game launchers", well beyond games we have a shit load of user/passwords. All your bills, any place you want to participate in some manner. So we already have dozens above and beyond games, we deal with that because it has logic needing that. Where is that one front end that can not only bring games into the mix but everything? Since that isn't happening and since we don't bitch much about non-game logins, games and just another login added to the long list of logins. It's where we are at, unless we get some other form of identification standardized. It's not just games, it's everything.

Somehow, I don't see Epic offering up much in the way of discounts in 3-6 months when they are the exclusive store for a game.

So here's your issue, though: Steam doesn't control pricing. The publishers do. Valve isn't offering you that discount, the publisher is. Valve doesn't go in and change prices. That's not their job. That's not a power they have.

Hello? Since Steam became the quasi monopoly for PC games even if you bought a game retail in the store you needed Steam to get it to run! Where is the choice in that? Steam basically killed off retail games that you actually owned until GOG turned up. It's only fair and square to get some competition to this bloated store with no support at all!

Fun story time. Picture it, June 2013. Company of Heroes 2 is released. The demo/beta didnt impress me and I held off buying it. Three months later I see in in retail box form (activates on steam) for $40. The steam price was still $60. I still waited but let some people know to check their local walmarts for deals.

3 months after that at the Christmas sale on Steam, I paid $14 for the full game. It hadn't done well in sales obviously but if you looked, even with the steam requirement (which bothered me for years and I avoided steam until 2011) you still could find deals on games.

Somehow, I don't see Epic offering up much in the way of discounts in 3-6 months when they are the exclusive store for a game.

It took a Steam a long time to get to that point. Returns are still pretty recent. Epic hasn't even existed long enough to do sales yet, and again, Steam didn't launch with Steam sales. And non-censorship? Steam only recently started allowing anime nudity, which I assume you're discussing, as nothing else has ever been censored on any of these retailers - video game censorship is generally a huge ball of nothing that people freak out without there being any true evidence of anyone taking your pixel boobs away.

Epic literally just launched. It's of course behind something that's about 15 years old. Steam wasn't built in a day. If revenue is flowing in, Epic will be able to build these things, much like Steam was able to.

Nah I mean games like hatred etc. that people were making such a fuss about.

Yea Epic has just started and I'm sure they will improve with time, but take a look at Origin and Ubi, those platforms have been around for quite a while now already and they don't even blip on the radar.

I'm thinking Epic is walking the same road as Ubi / Origin rather than a new GOG.

How many can you name other than Hatred, a shitty excuse for a game that was designed solely to be offensive and make headlines, not to be a good game. A game made by people desperately hoping some school shooter cited it, so they could get more press coverage? A game whose primary marketing was "we're victims and everyone is trying to censor us!" despite, y'know, no one censoring them.

Plus, I can't find a single place that asked them to make changes to it. Beyond that, it seems like it was on sale everywhere. And if you bought it, sorry, we all have been screwed after buying a terrible game due to the marketing campaign.

For me it comes down to refusing to reward anti-consumer practices, and platform exclusivity is a big one for me.
This... exactly.

I hope that the Epic store actually does become decent (right now it sucks is so many, MANY ways). I have no emotional attachment to Steam, but it just works, and works well. I can play many of my games on Linux. Games are downloaded and updated very quickly. Cloud saves work (usually). For me at least, it's "discovery" mechanisms allow me to find great things I've never seen before and that I would never have found without Steam.

If Epic can get all of these same things right, then awesome, but forcing me to choose the far inferior platform (for now) in order to buy your game means I'm that much less likely to do so. I've avoided many PC games I was interested in in the past that were on sucky platforms (hello Microsoft exclusives, I'm talking to you).
