Countdown to Anthem

A post on the BioWare Blog from BioWare's Casey Hudson talks about Anthem, as just one month remains before the launch of the mech shooter. He discusses the history of the game's development, which began over six years ago with a project codenamed DYLAN. He then brings us to the present day and even the future, as he discusses the game's launch and the various ways players will be able to play:
Anthem will launch with a ton of content, including a substantial main story that introduces you to the world and its characters. But there’s still a missing ingredient that we haven’t been able to test Anthem with: you. So, over the next month as you start to have opportunities to try what we’ve created, I ask you to keep one thing in mind: The launch of Anthem is not the end – it’s the beginning of an ongoing story in which you are a critical element. If there’s something you want more of, we can build it. If something isn’t right, let us know. And the story itself will unfold over time based on how you play the game. Soon, we will reveal more about our plans for how we intend to support that ongoing stream of content and features.

But when can you play? We are just days away from the first of several opportunities you’ll have to jump into Anthem and try it for yourself:

  1. If you have pre-ordered or are an active EA Access subscriber, you’ll be able to participate in the VIP demo starting January 25.
  2. Then, on February 1, the open demo goes live and everyone will be able to spend the weekend playing Anthem.
  3. If you subscribe to Origin Access Premier you’ll be able to start playing the full game through Early Access on February 15. Or you can play the first 10 hours on the same day through the Play First Trial.
  4. And finally, our worldwide launch date is February 22!

I’ll be spending a lot of time in the world of Anthem myself. I hope to see you there!

Hi, Derek (Crushbug)! Could you tell us if Anthem is more like BioWare's earlier efforts (SWTOR, Jade Empire, Mass Effect) or later efforts (Dragon Age Inquisition, Mass Effect Andromeda)?

I’ll be trying out the demo, I was in the beta test and didn’t get a good read on the game since it would crash when trying to switch levels, and of course it didn’t save progress until it successfully loaded the next level sooooo I saw the intro area about 5 times in a row and that’s it. I found the flight control to be super irritating because Invert Y In Flight didn’t actually work, but normal aiming inversion did. Super fun to have that change up when trying to fly. I was constantly smashing back into the ground or ceiling.

But those are silly bugs. Yes, ones that were kind of ridiculous to have survived getting into the beta, but I’m hoping they’re fixed in the demo. If not, well, I won’t be buying the game or ever returning to the demo to see if they get fixed.

Looking forward to the demo on February 1st, my coop group is all going to download and most likely bitch/applaud about various things in it.

Interesting that these COOP non-isometric ARPGs are all coming out at roughly the same time; Anthem, Division 2, and perhaps Borderlands 3. Borderlands 3 I'm guessing is going to be delayed for a bit for various court proceedings, but probably 2019 also? One way or another, the coop fix should be satiated.

Totally understand. And I am certainly not trying to hand wave away your concerns.

There are a lot of things that we can say, but there are also some folks that just won't believe us. Anthem is new. We want people to try out the demo next weekend and decide for themselves. If you like it, great; if not, no money lost.

And that's awesome. I absolutely massively applaud you guys for doing a demo. I don't know whether that was always the plan, or whether it was born out of the, shall we say... somewhat negative opinions floating around about Anthem, but it's a class act to let everyone try it out first. I definitely will do so.

Kudos to you and your team, Derek. Again, I hope the game does well. No, I hope it does great, so you can have a separate team make more content, and get these guys back to making (the REAL) Mass Effect 4.
Yes, the Demo was always in the plan, from at least a year ago.

Always good chatting with you.

3. EA doesn't seem to realize that PC gamers don't rent. They buy. That crap flew with consoles (and still does today with Redbox). The mindset today is that you BUY when there's a big sale on Steam or GOG (or the publisher platforms). Why would anyone rent when they can get 50-75% off a AAA-title that just came out 2-3 months ago? Foolishness.

I do the size of my Steam Library is a testimony of that... My friend started playing BF5 so to play with him I decided to take one year of Origin Premier after the free 10 hours. I played a lot of games I wouldnt have bought so far and a few that I never got around to buy but wanted to try. Ill be able to play Anthem on top of Darksider III / BF5 and a lot of smaller but fun games like Opus Magnum. I dont know if ill keep it next year, if theres onlyt one game I play constantly ill probably buy it by then it will be cheap.

I hope it doesn't tank, because I don't want Bioware to die without seeing if their one good studio (this one) can recapture the Mass Effect magic.

On the flipside, I'm thoroughly worried that it WILL tank and they WILL die.

I can always count on Creston's unwavering support.

Hey, remember back in the day when you said we would start charging for ME3 multiplayer map packs? Man, those were the days...

I do remember that! I'm glad you didn't, because ME3 mp was awesome. It was really the last time you guys made an awesome game.

And, you know, you're part of EA now, and EA suits make comments like "We spend a lot of time trying to think how we can implement FIFA's MTX into games like Battlefront and Battlefield." So yeah, I wonder why people are worried about shit like that going to infest their once-favorite studio as well? It's truly baffling.

In any case, I hope Anthem does well. I hope it's a lot more fun to play than it is to watch on videos. I hope you guys haven't spent six years betting on this game to the detriment of your two most succesful franchises only to watch it all go down in flames. I really do.

1. Worth nothing, Casey did not direct Anthem's development. He joined the studio after development began.

2. EA is either brave or stupid with a week head-start. Based on social media and BluesNews, we'll know by launch day what its worth is despite being sold on Origins with no ratings and feedback system. EA doesn't understand the power of the Internet to spread negative feedback and DOA a product launch.

3. EA doesn't seem to realize that PC gamers don't rent. They buy. That crap flew with consoles (and still does today with Redbox). I'm looking forward to this... And I'm happy to see an 'open demo' on the 1st...

And I as assuming the Play First Trial was free, but it wants me to log in with a subscriber acct, or pay $5 USD, so hopefully that demo 2w before is good : )

As for buying at launch... Depends on some friends feelings too, but if I buy it at launch, and there's paid DLC within a few months (like Destiny 2), I may just drop and never return... On the one hand, new content is great... On the other... That's way too soon for paid content. We'll see how EA does with their stellar record : )

it’s the beginning of an ongoing story in which you are a critical element

Or better put

The start of yet another EA game as a service failure where you are the whale that keeps the last remnants of a failing studio alive.
