J.J. Abrams/Valve Movie Collaboration is Still a Thing

"Yes." That's the content of a Gabe Newell email from a couple of days ago that's the basis for a new video from the Valve News Network. And no, it's not because the answer has three letters, so Half-Life 3 confirmed! The one-word response was to the question: "Hi Gaben, is Valve still working with J.J. Abrams on a movie?" The idea of the video is to present everything that's known about previously announced plans for Valve and J.J.'s Bad Robot to make movies based on Half-Life and Portal. The background they present makes his affirmation a surprise, as several developments following the announcement seem to suggest that this collaboration had fallen by the wayside. They also speculate that since J.J. Abrams seemed confident a couple of years ago that an announcement about movie plans was near that things may be further along at this point than all this radio silence suggests. The video also takes Valve to task for their poor communication on topics like this, but that doesn't seem likely to change, so it is what it is. But they also say they hear rumors of a culture change at Valve following some new hires that they hope will move some projects like this out of "development hell," and they express hopes that this turns out to be the case, a sentiment we can wholeheartedly get behind.

Wrong choice! Valve and Guillermo del Toro belong together - both are known for sticking to their games/movies, finishing their franchises, and quick production cycles! /s
They're waiting for you, Gabe, in the test chamber!

The American Uwe Boll. But in his case he is actually destroying good IPs. They never gave Uwe that chance.

About to give up on waiting for BIS to come back to their senses and do a real ArmA 2 successor.

Yep. Pretty much this. His original stuff is actually decent, but when he gets hired to film someone else's story it usually ends up a huge pile of stinking shit.

The only reason why he seems to be such a huge success and in such high demand is that he does the big flashy stuff really well, and I guess he isn't too particular over letting the studio execs have their way. Style over substance. Wins in hollywood every time.

people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.

It's not like I trust what Gabe says. I still remember him replying to an email in August 2013 asking if Half-Life 2 is delayed and his response was similar to "first time I've heard about this". A few days later, the game was officially announced as delayed

I'd love to see movies based on HL and Portal. just not with JJ Lamebrams involved. The only thing that would be worse is if it was Michael Bay - but at least he'd get the 'splosions right.

All Valve progress comes from new blood.
So yeah they're hiring themselves into a state of activity again.
And once they release whatever it is, back into hibernation.
