Piranha Games is now accepting preorders
for no fewer than three different community editions of MechWarrior 5:
Mercenaries, the upcoming mechanized first-person shooter sequel. These
include bonuses for the new mostly single-player game, as well as some perks for
its older sibling, MechWarrior Online which alone are said to be equal in cash
value to the cost of the special editions, which range in cost from $49.99 to
$119.99. They also offer a new trailer
showing off gameplay. Here's a bit from the announcement on the game itself:
MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is modeled after the gameplay style from
MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries, granting players the freedom to run their campaigns
how they choose. In MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, pilots will build, manage, and
guide their own mercenary unit through a multi-year campaign during the
sprawling Third and Fourth Succession Wars.
Whether braving missions alone, alongside AI-controlled pilots, or with the help
of up to three friends via co-op play, pilots will face complicated situations
with no perfect solution as they choose which contracts to accept, where in the
galaxy to direct their attention, and how to balance repairs or upgrades with
maintaining their unitís precious resources.

Just watch, I bet within a few months after release someone will have hacked rudimentary Versus MP into MW5. If they truly are adding co-op, then the groundwork will already be there.
For some reason those that still cling to MWO want there to be "MWO2" in the MW5 engine. As in, they still want the same helping of grindy f2p (consumables, "skill trees", expensive virtual toy "Mech Packs", etc.) nonsense attached to MW Multiplayer instead of just having a straight up drop-in/drop-out thing like MW: Legends.
