Crytek Ghosts Indie Fund; Ghost Theory in Jeopardy

Ghost Theory is a paranormal game that developer Dreadlocks funded through a successful Kickstarter back in 2016, but DSOGaming has word that the game will probably never be released. This news is apparently derived from a UPDATE #22 (actually #23) called Final breakpoint is here, which can only be viewed by backers of the project. The developer explains their problems stem from Crytek backing away from promised funding to be supplied through an Indie Development Fund they announced in 2016. DSoG takes the developer itself to task for being evasive or deceptive, but this also reveals Crytek has seemingly quietly dropped the fund part of the Indie Development Fund:
Apparently Crytek has decided to pull the plug on this program and was unable to offer any money to the winners and as you may have guessed, Ghost Theory was among them. Still, Crytek did offer a free license to CRYENGINE to all the winners. Obviously, though, this was not what Dreadlock was looking for.

Now I want to be crystal clear that this was a shit move from Crytek. However, Dreadlocks is also to be blamed here for lying to everyone. Here is what the team had to say to its backers in its latest update.

“We were lured into a competition for millions of dollars, which also required a change of the game’s engine, and we spent months with it. It was our last big hope. But after GT was unofficially marked as a winner, we were then told: “sorry, we actually don’t have any money for the winners.” As a compensation, we received free licenses for our new game engine, which was totally pointless as we couldn’t pay salaries to developers who would actually use it. Today, all of this is brushed under the carpet and the competition site was simply removed, like it has never existed.”

Dreadlocks claims that although it got a free license, it’s pointless as it couldn’t pay salaries to developers to use it. Wait what? Back in 2016 the team claimed that it was already transitioning from Unity to CRYENGINE. It didn’t claim that without the price money it would not be able to make it happen. What about the kickstarted money then? Why change engines if you are not sure whether you can finish the project that gamers have already funded via your campaign? Why bet everything on an Indie Dev program? Or how about, why don’t you re-fund everyone that contributed to your Kickstarter and then, from a fresh start, apply to the Indie Dev Fund program?

sounds like bullshit
everyone knows Crytek has no $ years and years ago, and a promise of money without a contract? yea right....

all of this is just one more reason not to kickstart anymore.

Crytek needs to go belly up, sell off it IPs to better studios so we might actually get a real Crysis 4, just not to EA ...

Either that, or Crytek needs its own Fortnite.

Sounds like a bunch of horseshit excuses to try to hide the fact they're taking the money and running.

Come up with a plausible looking mockup and you could easily crowdfund that for a million bucks.

Agreed, FarCry was worlds above Crysis.

Have to agree with you. Far Cry 1 was very impressive at release but it hasn't held up well. Crysis on the other hand absolutely blew people away and it was FUN. The multiplayer deathmatch gave me a feeling of competition that I felt had been missing since Quake died out. The game was a remarkable accomplishment and earned its place in the gaming hall of fame.

It's a damn shame they never matched that success again.

It's amazing what a minefield crowd-fundimg games has become. It seemed like such a boon for gaming when it really started to take off. Now it has turned into a means by which indie devs can milk the gullible and the naive just as well as the AAA publishers. It's a goddamned shame - System Shock was probably my biggest kickstarter project hope and it's all but dead, and I'm just waiting for Bloodstained and Shenmue 3 to fail spectacularly too.

Nah. Far Cry 1 = conslow garbage with checkpoint saves and retarded AI monkeys.

Crysis is by far their greatest achievement as a true PCMR game. It also spawned the legendary "But can it run Crysis?" meme. The game was unanimously at the top of the visual food chain for several years. No other game came even close in a (relatively for video gaming) looong time. It also did the suit thing pretty well.

Unfortunately, like Far Cry, it kinda turned to garbage when the aliens (retarded monkeys in FC) showed up.
Imagine what great games FC (with proper quick save and sans monkeys), Crysis (sans aliens) or Half-Life (sans Xen) could have been.

It is almost like all these devs were afraid of too much awesomeness in their games like 'quick let's fuck up our game in a major way half way through so people won't like it too much!'. Dipshits.

I stand firm that Crytek's greatest achievement was Farcry 1. Their biggest mistake was probably selling off the franchise rights or maybe that would of been a bad thing had they kept them.

I did try Hunted, their last game and it was pretty damn dull outside of OK visuals. Nothing totally ground breaking...

Sounds like a clear case of fraud to me. Still can't believe people crowdfund anything anymore when most of them are scams or simply fail due to lack of experience. I guess like Weird Al, they lost on Jeopardy...baby, oooooh ooooh.

Crytek, they have no money because they keep putting out trash. Hunted, a stupid PVP only game that many have been complaining to the devs to also put in a PVE only option for those who just want PVE.

But that has fallen on deft ears. So they have lost out on a lot of sales. They continually make these types of mistakes and will eventually end up a close studio.

So their business plan to stay afloat was to be among the winners of a competition. That doesn't seem very smart.

Dreadlocks asked Crytek in 2016 for money despite Crytek already being in financial trouble back then? Great choice! Let me guess: the fund was administrated by Lehman Brothers II?
