Epic Launching App Store

MarketWatch reports that Epic Games is following their recent foray into running their own Games Store for PC games with a mobile app store. Like their assault on Steam, their run at Apple and Google involves undercutting their royalty structure. Word is, like their PC store, Epic's app store will only skim 12%:
Combined, Apple Inc. AAPL, +1.14% and Google GOOGL, -0.41% power about 99.9% of the world’s smartphones. Even that prowess doesn’t leave them immune to a little competition.

A little competition, in this case, comes from the force behind “Fortnite”— the global videogame phenomenon that has amassed more than 200 million registered players who have generated more than $1 billion in revenue to date. Epic Games, the developer of the Battle Royale-style shooter game, is capitalizing on that popularity by launching its own app store. The company’s founder and CEO, Tim Sweeney, has long been critical of the app store business models propagated by Apple and Google, believing both companies take too large of a cut from app sales relative to the costs involved in running the stores.

Epic’s solution is to allow developers to keep 88% of the revenue their apps generate compared to the standard 70% allowed by Apple and Google. The first version of Epic’s store went live earlier this month for games designed for the PC and Mac and it has already had an impact on that end of the market. Steam, long the most popular platform for PC games, already tweaked its own fee structure in response.

Almost instantly after making an Epic account to check out their games store, I started getting notices of attempted breaches on the account. Never used it to play or even download a game, never bought anything on it, or used it for anything else. Never had a problem anywhere else before, but security concerns almost instantly on an unused account with Epic.

Pretty much an instant warning to never actually use their store or setup until they start taking security seriously, and I imagine this will only make it worse.

ah yes, soon to come a mega billion $ lawsuit against Google & Apple for monopolistic practices of bundling , defaulting and tweaking Google Play / AppleStore to Android ( in the US. Seems like there is already a case in the works in the EU for Apple, or was it Google )

sweet.

Ironic that half of Epic is owned by the Chinese where they literally choose what you get to choose.

How exactly do they propose making their platform work for iOS devices? Apple has that locked down hard. The delivery system is very draconian by design. (It's also one of the reasons my iPhone is the last Apple product I buy. My next phone is going to be Android.)

I just had to update to the latest Epic Games launcher... and my goodness, is that thing a total mess compared to every other launcher out there.

It's slow, clunky... and the currency for games was in UAH (and signing into the website to try and fix it just came up with an error).

A big no thanks at this point, for whatever they do. I just got a Rift and both the Oculus and Viveport apps work like a dream compared to Epic's efforts...

Hell no, Google and Apple barely even do that.

Assuming they can get this off the ground at all, seeing as apple is locked and Google has a defacto monopoly going, I'm not so sure a race to the bottom is what an app store needs , if anything the big two needs better control over some of the rubbish that's out there. If they could rid the field of all the ads/pay to use/win/play shenanigans , sure , but with 12% they'll have less resources to do just that

Yeah this is nice and all, but how is this going to work on an iPhone? Unless it's rooted, people are not going to be able to download and run anything off your App store.

On Android you can allow unknown sources, and sideload from an alt app store, but afaik, not on Apple.

Is it coming out for i-devices? Because I thought Apple had an airtight lock on that. They produce the hardware and software, they can lock sales down to their store. It’s entirely their own ecosystem.

Android, due to their more open nature and several companies involved, can’t stop it from happening. Amazon already has an android digital-services-store, but it hasn’t shown up on Apple even after several years.

Also, yeah, Epic’s store has only one advantage currently, and it only benefits developers. They need to move fast to put in some features users take for granted before users will really take it seriously. Currently, I’m absolutely going to be buying Satisfactory on Epic’s store, but only because that’s the only place it’ll be for at least a year.

How does the Epic App Store work? Android (iirc) requires you to enable 'Unsigned apps' if you want to install apps from a source other than Google Play store.

On Apple products I'm not so sure, but I was under the impression their eco-system was heavily locked down? You probably can install unsigned apps, but they likely make it difficult and certainly not something the average person would attempt.
