The Steam Awards 2018 Nominees - Winter Sale Starts Thursday

The Steam Blog announces The Steam Awards 2018 nominees, saying that the community will be able to vote on these beginning on Thursday when the Steam Winter Sale begins. There are eight categories: Game of the Year, VR Game of the Year, Labor of Love, Best Environment, Better with Friends, Alternate History, Fun with a Machine, and Best Developer. Interestingly, not all the games in all categories came out this year. Also, Valve is not including themselves in the best developer category. Here are the nominees:
The Steam Community has spoken, and we are proud to announce the finalists for The Steam Awards 2018 -- but we still need your help choosing the winners!

Notes on Best Developer category:
"Best Developer” proved to be a highly-contested category with a lot of close calls among the top nominees. As a result, we expanded the set of nominees to 10. In addition, we’ve excluded ourselves from this category. We appreciate the love you’ve shown us, but we want to honor the other awesome developers on Steam, so we have excluded Valve from the final tally.

Interesting a lot of those games are not from 2018.

Just shows you how atrocious this year was for gaming overall

I don't understand the parameters here. Some of these games came out years ago.

I agree that Beat Saber will win, but only because it's the "cool" game that all the kids are playing. I've spent far, far more time in Skyrim VR. Beat Saber isn't even a tech demo compared to the amount of content and gameplay in Skyrim.

Heh... Only Wolf I agree with in your list... Mine is:
No idea
Beat Saber, but a fucking MASSIVE margin
Path of Exile
Far Cry 5, but I haven't played Subnautica yet
Overcooked! 2
Wolf
Factorio
Meh...

Monster Hunter World is pretty damn good though, and that's saying something when even I consider that game good, takes HUGE effort to understand each weapon though.

I was so excited to buy and play Subnautica. When I finally got it, I don't know, I was kind of disappointed. I think these survival type games (No Man Sky) are just not for me. They are like a never ending grind of get this and that to create this and that so you can then create this and that to create more of that. It's like, since when did grinding to get materials become a game in itself and ultimately what is the fun in that??

I don't know, it had great visuals and sound, but the gameplay didn't do it for me. Perhaps I need to give it more time to really be able to get into it but the initial get go was very boring for me and didn't hold my attention enough to get anywhere really.

Follow where the story takes you if you're looking for more direction, you'll pick up important new items and schematics along the way. I was treating it like a survival sandbox when I first started and felt a little bored and frustrated, too, but this game is different than most others in that there is actually a narrative to guide you (NMS has a very thin "story" they shoe-horned in after release). The first big step in that is to make your way over to the crashed ship off in the distance.

VR game of the year will be Beat Saber. Is it the best VR game? No, not by a long shot, but it absolutely is one of the best things to put people in to show them VR without being overwhelming.

I recently played through most of “Virtual Virtual Reality”, I’m not finished but I feel I’m very close...anyway, it’s pretty spectacular. Weird as hell, extremely aware of VR overhype, and just a fun adventure. It’s got light puzzle solving, and apparently has multiple endings.

Vanishing Realms is still the best goddamn thing done in VR so far. It’s a one-man project, and the visuals are a reminder of that, but it also runs on ANYTHING, while also using VR to the fullest I’ve seen.

lol, I find video game awards mostly a farce. If it is on TV, it's mostly for advertising of the next best games coming out. Ultimately, I mean, isn't it hardcore opinion based or do we automatically just give the award to whichever game had the highest reviews?

Video games have always been about choice and opinion. So many games one person may not play, another would. A game that I can't stand to death could be another's GOTY. It's so much opinion based that because a game receives an award, it would never warrant me to play it if it is just not my cup a tea.

Oh that's just like movie awards! lol

BTW - Yeah, more Steam sales, but who cares? As opposed to no sales? I'll take whatever the f**K type of sale they call it as long as I see some discounts. Lord only knows that I don't need more games, but sales are always good!

Ouch. Okay, I'm not a AAA kinda guy but not one of my nominations made that list in the appropriate category. Great to see Subnautica get some recognition for best environment but I'm pretty sure I voted that one game of the year, and best VR game I think I went for Vox Machinae.

Maybe next year.

My wallet just swallowed a Prilosec and two extra strength Tums.

You should treat your wallet better and throw less monies down the Gabe Sarlacc Pit.

The big Steam sales have been a joke for a few years now. Much better sales on Fanatical, GMG and CDKeys.com etc. all year round. Buy smart, save cash.

See, I always knew you were a cute little garbage queen!

The real answers -regardless of nomination- are, of course:

- Pillars of Eternity Deadfire
- Elite Dangerous VR
- DCS World
- Far Cry 5
- Does not compute. What the fuck is a "friend"????
- Wolfenstein II
- BattleTech, no brainer (can't believe the SHITFEST that got nominated there in its stead!)
- Larian Studios

Yeah, a year ago.

Enh, only good thing about Steam sales now is it makes everyone else beat their sales prices.

Kingdomcome was a great game but the bugs were killer. They should polish it up and get a VR version. I think my GOTY for PC was Dragon Quest XI... super polished game. I want to like Odyssey but it just bores the hell out of me. Monster Hunter World, I just couldn't get into it no matter how hard I tried.
