Up to this point, I had a bit of experience with classic C&C, telnet-based MUDs, Diablo 1, and classic Warcraft, etc. but had never seen such a game as Starsiege Tribes. It was played at a friend of a friend's house on a LAN and it blew my mind.
Such a wonderful classic.
And, like many of y'all have already stated, this game triggered a passionate love of technology in me as well, creating custom PCs, setting up a LAN, spending more time troubleshooting WHY THE F***ING HELL CAN"T WE CONNECT TO EACH OTHER ON OUR HUB, etc. ahhhhh such wonderful memories!!
We'd spend more time troubleshooting the LAN and troubleshooting PCs then we would gaming. And those beige boxes were ready to give you razor cuts as you worked on the system internals.
Good good memories. and the lag always turned out to be the one dude d/ling other people's porn folders on the down low. |

It's the main game we played for years at the LAN party I went to.
Which led to a job a the internet cafe we met at
Which led to me taking networking courses
Which led to my career.
I literally owe most of my adult life to Starsiege Tribes. I used to play Tribes at my friend's house before I built my first gaming machine for CS and that took over our lives. Then just a few years later when Tribes 2 came out I remember buying it specifically to take to the yearly huge 300+ LAN party we'd go to... "All of the hardcore gamers are going to be playing this!" ... but then they weren't, it was all CS with a smattering of Quake 3 mods. I had fun with the short time I put into it though, just wish I had some friends playing it too at the time.
Replace your ode with CS and that's pretty close to my story. |

I literally owe most of my adult life to Starsiege Tribes. It taught me a lot as well. I was really bad at it at the start because it was such a different game, but then I decided I want to learn this game and be good at it and I became one of the best players. Taught me I can learn anything, if I only want to. |

Saw a guy at DragonCon last year carrying an oldschool Spinfusor. My kids and I got excited and asked for pics. He had this huge look of relief on his face and said,"I've been carrying this thing all day and you guys are the first ones to recognize it!" |
