Fallout 76 Launches Early

In spite of the announcement that Fallout 76 goes live at midnight tonight (tomorrow?), it is being widely reported that Bethesda's RPG sequel is unlocked and ready to play right now in many territories. PC Gamer explains they were able to get in, even after hitting a coming soon splash screen:
Fallout 76 has gone live on PC, seemingly everywhere in the world. We've just logged into servers from the US west coast and the UK, and we're seeing reports from players around the globe that they've been able to start playing as well.

It may not appear that way at first—when launching the game, we were treated to a menu screen saying "We'll see you for launch day on Wednesday, November 14", but clicking and waiting a few seconds brings up the 'Play' menu, even in parts of the world where it's still Tuesday.

Looks like Reclamation Day started a little early!

I fall into the weird dichotomy of simultaneously being one of the "Fuck Bethesda" crowd and a Bethesda fanboy. I love how they make games like Skyrim and Fallout 4. But fuck them for not fixing ANY of the long-running, extremely well-known bugs (many game-breaking) for years but having no problem re-releasing the game multiple times for extra profit. But then again, hardly anyone is making games like that anymore so I still love them.

That's changing with Fallout 76. A series of terrible design decisions with very few upsides - I only feel disappointment. Damn Bethesda - sometimes I hate myself for loving you.

Funny, I found Fallout 4 to be the game that killed Fallout for me. I have zero interest in the series at this point, and until they do something impressive with 5 I suspect I'm done with it.

For me it was FO3.

To me, FA is isometric top down, with combat using SPECIAL driven turn based combat.
FO3 was ~none of that.

Sure, you could use VATS, but it felt like an after thought. Why have a game where you can have a XX% chance for a head shot, when you can just put your cursor on the head and shoot? Just felt stupid.

I just wish they would make an actual fallout game, not an FPS with a fallout skin.

I'm actually hoping they make an original-style FA game for cell phones (because that's the most likely place for a turn based version in modern times).

No. It's the normal white-knuckle FPS stuff. Don't get me started on VATs. That's just... well, I don't know. It's horrible.

Patience, grasshopper. You want it to be mind-blowingly awesome, right? That takes time. If they released it now, it'd be Bethesda level quality.

Which do you want?

ramp up the player counts in a more gradual fashion by having an unannounced early launch, and get some last second beta testers for what is sure to still be a bug-ridden shitshow

I must be an anomaly then. My experience with every Bethesda game has been a shitshow. Compared to ESO launch, what I saw of FO76 on twitch made it look like God's gift to man. Compared to other major publishers... still looked like the same old shitshow. I'd say I'd grab it for $5 like I've done with their other titles after Fallout 3 but by then the game will be a ghost town I bet.

I love Fallout, even the ones that weren't great, but this just sounds terrible. I can't get myself to be interested in it. Have to wait for another real Fallout game.

Most of the pre-launch reviews have described the beta as a sub-par, un-optimized, DOA MMO FPS*, which is foreign to the quality many have come to expect from Bethesda's AAA deliveries. The early launch might be a hail-marry move to get a positive response from the play-early crowd. The decision not to release on Steam is likely a way to mute negative reaction.

Sub-Par = the game doesn't bring anything new to the Fallout series concerning graphics or story. By all accounts it is an online-only PVP-only game.
un-optimized = the game runs at an atrocious sub-30 framerates on modern hardware.
MMO FPS = In the Fallout titles FPS was secondary to everything else. With 76, FPS is front and center, and it doesn't work because the engine is essentially Fallout 4. Worse, the aiming and targeting are abyssal. In one test the reviewer said he was aiming right at a player's head and shot four times and none of them hit the target.
