The item to be removed, or side of body to be opened, should be permanently stained or tattooed with "cut here".
If the the kidney is on the left side of the body, both you, the charge nurse and the surgeon should understand whose left it is they are talking about lest it be confusing if you're laying on your belly versus laying on your back.
