Diablo Mobile Backlash

Most BlizzCon announcements are met with enthusiasm from the gathering of Blizzard fans, but the company really stepped in it with yesterday's announcement of Diablo: Immortal, a new installment in the action/RPG series being created for mobile devices. The response on the Diablo Reddit raking Blizzard over the coals suggests there may have been a better way to handle this, as they made the mistake of hyping this announcement which raised hopes for a proper PC game. As an example of the discontent this is causing, one can look at the Diablo Immortal Cinematic Trailer on YouTube. Blizzard's cinematics usually generate incredibly positive responses, but as of this writing, the clip has 7.7k upvotes and 232k downvotes.

Side by side image and video comparisons between of Netease's Endless of God and Diablo: Immortal (also developed by Netease). Save for the map appearing on opposite sides, this is an identical product.

Why are you assuming this is a zero sum game? Because Blizzard is making Diablo Immortal does not mean we will never see Diablo 4 (undoubtedly it's in development).

It's an expectations problem.

If you tell your GF, "I have the biggest announcement to make!" she's going to expect you to propose. When you tell her that actually the company is transferring you to Omaha, NE, she's gonna shit a brick, and rightfully so.

By the way...Blizzard was always in the business of making money. Don't try this revisionist history shit and somehow say that is new or the "old Blizzard is dead". Your rose colored memory goggles are showing.

It's not that they needed to make money, it's the focus:

"Let's make the best game we can, and the money will take care of itself"

vs.

"Let's design the game to exploit gambling weakness in peoples' psyches."

Big difference there.

This would have been fine as a companion release to a full PC game (a la Fallout Shelter) or announced outside of Blizzcon, but this shouldn't have been considered a big announcement.
Exactly. Fallout Shelter was extremely well received becuase it wasn't the main focus. It was something EXTRA for fans.

Diablo 1-3 are concurrently so old and optimized you can play these games on just about any PC. Even a $400 computer from Walmart will play those games. So it has nothing to do with access. It has to do with Blizzard bringing the game to those who prefer to play games on their phones. And they did it knowing full well both their core audience and the E-SPORTS audience is "PC MASTER RACE."

They should have started with: DIABLO MOBILE ONLY GAME from the start.
The message was Blizzcon, we love diablo, we love the way diablo has brought people together to slay demons, oh hey phones? we have phones, and we want to have diablo on phones. We want to do this right for diablo! where you can play with everyone everywhere! Diablo lore diablo lore diablo lore.
prerendered cinematic that wont ever be realtime on a phone. which didn't have the ON APPLE and ON GOOGLE ANDROID.
more about how we love diablo and immortal. blah blah 20 years blah blah
oh hey lets show runtime of the phone! yeah! PHONE DIABLO (most of which doesn't show the UI of the buttons) -- SUPER misleading. more title text about how you can play on phone. zoom out with phone UI.

To the audience, there's still a chance at this point that it is going to be cross platform on PC and mobile. (reasonable assumption because Diablo has always been on PC.)
Cut to cosplay playing on phones... No pc clients to be seen anywhere.

Have some contrast: Hearthstone (The only other Cellphone experience Blizzard has made) came out on PC/Mac first. and later, much after the game was out they announce it was coming to phones.
Anyone who's been to blizzcon up to this point has been able to make a reasonable assessment based on history of product releases that while they're talking about mobile a ton, it's a new diablo on PC!

Biggest marketing mistake ever. So much so that fans booed a product that was made for them.

And to your quip about glad you're not in games anymore, I'm also glad, you obviously don't have the passion for it.

The company that made Warcraft 3 and Diablo 2 does not exist anymore so this surprised only people who don't understand what kind of shitty publisher Activision really is.

This. D3 doesn't hold a candle to the awesomness that D2 and D2:LOD was. Blizzard lost the magic touch a long time ago.

D3 is good, but I definitely prefer D2.

The last time I did a BlizzCon VT, eSports made up maybe like 20-30% of the content. This year, half of BlizzCon was eSports. I hate eSports. I am likely not going to buy a BlizzCon VT going forward.
