Out of the Blue

Boo! Hope I didn't scare you too badly, but it is, after all, Halloween. We're all set for the occasion in the BlueTower, as we have a stockpiled of about a million pounds of candy, so we are ready no matter how many trick-or-treaters show up. We know we'll get at least two, as our friends the twins (and their parents) plan on coming over for a bit. Their folks are the ones who introduced us to drink-or-treat (or liquor treat), so it may turn into a party. Gunnar-man is set too, as we've decided his Super-Man costume works better than some of the prop-heavy outfits we have for him, so I think he'll once again be the dog of steel.

Besides, even if the person reported it, the HR person is about my age, and I'm pretty sure they know what "marzipan" is. They might even write up the person for wasting their time and report them to their manager. In any case, I believe in no harm, no foul with coworkers (even those who do stupid things). I just wanted to share the experience as one of the strangest things I've experienced.

It's definitely a super strange thing to experience, not to mention you are 100% not racist (just going by your posts..) so whoever said that to you is bullshitting. Or wants your job.

Maybe you encountered a sweets hater.

I wouldn't allow that either, I would have expected a further explanation at a minimum and probably an apology...

Uh, yeah -- I would have pushed back on that.

I did. But along the lines of "Marzipan is a food ingredient used in cooking. Especially for desserts and cookies." My Indian coworker was like, "Marzipan is a cooking ingredient." We were both confused. Me more than him.

Err, I can't imagine why it would be. Maybe they misheard you and/or didn't actually know what marzipan is? Perhaps they thought you said marsupial? I probably would have directly questioned them on their reasoning for that.

They heard me. They thought it was racist because the word sounded like a Latino word of some sort. Something about the "mar" and "zi." I don't know. Definitely one of the weirdest things I've experienced. Feels like Urban Dictionary: every word is racist to someone.

First time in my professional career that a co-worker accused me of being racist. Today I used the word marzipan because the group topic was about cooking and food ingredients. My natural reaction: Blank => Confused

When did people become stupid and overly sensitive to the degree that a word like "marzipan" is considered racist?

It is a start, now they need to replace the AD and entire board of regents. Ridiculously they are not firing Durkin for cause and he will collect over $5m per his contract. So, the University continues to walk a dangerously thin line...

The coach is fired now. Apparently Maryland University was surprised to find out that everybody with a brain, let alone the dead student's parents, were going to be pissed that he got to keep his job. I mean...half the players walked out of the first team meeting with him back. This is my shocked face: Blank

Okay, hadn't heard or read about the stadium renaming. Nice. There was plenty of sufficient cause, they just ignored it.

The decision makes absolutely no sense. Even at a sporting level. The big thing about college sports is recruiting, how is Durkin going to recruit anyone? And it's not like he is the next Nick Saban or something. He hasn't been winning national championships or anything. Maryland's football program is at best, mediocre.

A lot of the decision came down to a political battle. The head of the regents is, no offense to Cutter, a rich old white man. He was furious at the leadership of the school for renaming the stadium, taking off the name of a politician that supported segregation. This was his way of getting back at that leadership - by taking the decision out of their hands then "humiliating" them by finding against them.

A rich old white moron so full of spite in defense of a shitty politician that he made a horrible decision. Major credit to the athletes walking out, and standing up to this on Twitter. They're not in an easy place, with their scholarships dependent upon this, but they're still trying to do the right thing for Jordan McNair.
And don't forget the $$$
After parting with $315,000 to rid themselves of strength coach Rick Court they starting looking at the bottom line.
There is no need to buy out Coach Durkin's multimillion dollar contract nor buy out Damon Evans' contract. Or fire a president and potentially have litigation if President Loh deemed there wasn't sufficient cause.

It's all about the benjamins
