1080TI still seems to be the sweet spot at the high end. I got an Evga Black Edition for $600 last month. Until those stocks are completely depleted, I think it's going to be a much better buy than any of the 20XX generation cards.

Nvidia is moving away from rasterisation to ray/path tracing as as a natural move away from the old tricks used to present a 3d gaming image which has had deminishing returns in graphical quality for the last 8 years.

Expect this to be the start of a crossing over and further h/w, software and games move to this new method. New consoles will utilise hybrid ray/path tracing - See Sony's next gen...

Heh, in 20 years time, you'll probably have to buy an old 2080 to play 'those old games' that used the current method

Hopefully Bluesnews will still be around then to say I told you so

Well I for one like the 2070. But only because it's gonna nerf the prices of used 1070s into the ground Im still rocking a 970 so sometime soon might be a good time to upgrade to a 1070

Definitely not worth the $200+ over the 1070 MSRP.

Of course I just bought my 1070 for $230 used, which makes it an awesome bang for buck.

Why compare it to the 1070? Pricewise it's a replacement for the 1080, not the 1070.

I agree, it has awful bang for the buck, but so did the 1080 and some here still bought it.

The 1080 had *amazing* bang for the buck. It dropped in at the exact same price as the previous-fastest 980 Ti and was 20-50% faster.

I'm going to hold off and see what AMD does with Navi. If it sucks, the 1XXX series will be cheaper after 1st quarter and I can pick up one then. I see zero reason to upgrade to a 2XXX series at this time.

Something to consider is that Pascal availability will diminish over time and tariffs are going to hit the market in January if you live in Canada or the US.

I'm willing to wager that the tariffs don't make it in to actual enforcement or, if they do, they'll be abandoned shortly thereafter. Even if Pascal stock is non-existent, then I'm still getting a performance upgrade from my current GPU if Navi based GPUs are cheaper than the RTX line and faster than what I currently have.

Because I'm comparing directly to the performance boost over last gen... the extra 200+ for what you get isn't worth it, IMO. If it was like a 2x boost... then yeah... but it's not. We're used to getting a decent boost each gen (within the same-ish model as the last gen) with a similar price point for the next gen. Especially since the last gen is 2 years old. Is the RTX 2070 a decent performance boost? Yes. Is it worth a $200+ premium over the last gen? Hell No. The techspot averages a 27% increase in performance compared to the 1070, but the MSRP price is 57% increase ($380 -> $599). Even $380 to $499 is a 31% increase in price. So the price is way out of wack.

What one is really paying for is early access / future proofing of ray tracing, which never pays off. By the time there will be enough ray tracing games to support, the tech will be in 2nd or 3rd gen from the current RTX 20xx.

Nvidia is smoking some good shit with this pricing.

I do see articles claiming 2070's at $500, well I'll believe that when I see it for sale somewhere for that. Even at that it is a questionable buy, it performs well in that slot, but $500 to me is about $100 more than I spend of VC's. Fence for sure, probably leaning towards a no, at $600 solid no.

Agree, I'm in the market for a new card, but $500 is the limit.

The 2070 is a joke, right? Right? RIGHT?

Looks like perf is about the same as a Radeon RX Vega 64, with price to match (about $500). A lot of framerates are the same for the 2070 and the 1080TI, but the 1080TI is also faster in a lot of games too, sometimes by a lot. It's usually been the case that the xx70 of the current generation has been equal to or slightly better than the top Nvidia card of the previous gen, but that's not the case this time. Definitely disappointing, and prices for the 1080ti remain high in the $700 range.

How long till the price drops for cheaper cards like GTX 1070?

Well what Nvidia has done is make a product line the steps from A to Z. The 1070 isn't competing with the 2070 on an even price point. Nope, the 1070 is cheaper and is slower. Up and down the line everything is falling into its own slot as if they could all have been called 10XX's. 1070-(1070) 1080-(1080) 1085-(2070) 1090-(1080TI) 1095-(2080) 1099-(2080TI) as an example, this time is different.

Historically there haven't been these prices drops either, stock just wanes and then the 10xx's are gone, no fire sale.

So I'm not expecting a price drop, the only thing that will drop prices is if the 20xx's don't sell well and perhaps that does happen.

This rounds is unprecedented in a few ways, so known patterns more out the door.

Hmm. Am I in a time warp? Anyway, the 2080ti is a complete beast at neural network applications. Equal to the V100 (10K$ card) in most applications. For VR, holy cow, this thing sizzles. 60fps 4K for gaming.

It's easier to justify than the 2080 but that's not saying it's an incredible product for the price either. This is assuming they'll actually sell for MSRP too which is a huge if.
