I guess apathy is a form of "No." It looks like the crowdfunding success of Star Citizen forced EA to see enough value in the IP to eventually sell it to Piranha Games, who decided not to use it and instead went in another direction that bombed hard.
There's something wrong with all your links I can't put my finger on. Here, I fixed them:
Transvere Announced
Could have been Wing Commander Online
Funding reworked

Now imagine if this was new wing commander game within the well established wing commander universe, man IMAGINE.... sigh but instead we got this paint drying experience.
Unfortunately, EA said no to Chris when he asked for the WC license. That's why he went with Star Citizen / SQ42.
Do you have source if possible? At the very least he could have pushed the issue once they got the big bucks early on. I am sure EA would come to terms eventually, not like EA doing much with it anyways.

Well, if the game is half as good as that trailer makes it... I'll be satisfied for my $25 original backing.
Have no intention of playing the MMO though. I was only looking for a modern Wing Commander game when I backed this.
SQ 42 will be finished in a year or so. The MMO will never be finished.

Wing Commander was ahead of its time with the use of FMV and branching narratives, which was costly for development. Other genres provided a better return on investment. Since Star Citizen demonstrated demand for the genre we've already seen more activity than in the previous decade, with No Man's Sky, Elite: Dangerous and EVE: Valkyrie being the highest profile examples. Publishers are inherently risk averse, which is why Chris Roberts went with the crowdfunding approach.
And I would call all of that analysis as very optimistic. There is a reason no one else did a Wing Commander after Wing Commander. Again, you might be right, but I see no reason to agree with you. Only time will tell.Mr. Tact wrote on Oct 11, 2018, 21:54:The issue is not how long it will take but whether it will be a decent game at the end. So as long as the progress is in the right direction and CIG is responsive to the community I am happy to wait.
I do have a question for you though, at what date when they have not delivered what you have described, will you start waving the white flag? 2020? 2024? When?
For me there are a few important milestones coming up - we have 3.3.5 introducing Hurston (the first planet) and Object Container Streaming (a technology to improve performance), then 3.4 (due in December) will rework the flight physics. Those need to improve the game rather than add more issues. But the main one will be server meshing, which will allow all players to exist within the same connected universe. If CIG can't deliver on that then I don't see how the game will work. That for me will make or break the game. In terms of timeframe it was on the schedule for next year but certainly it needs to be in the game within the next five years or it just isn't going to happen.

Now we know where all those piles of money went - so many A-list actors. Anyone else feel that's completely unnecessary in a video game?
I actually think it's pretty cool having all these stars in the game. I typically agree with you, that name stars in games are distracting, but it really works for me here.

I think Squadron 42 is a pretty safe bet, in so much as CIG has already demonstrated excellent performances from the AAA cast and we already know they can handle cinematics. The gameplay also doesn't need to be as involved as Star Citizen, as it will largely be focused on combat than all the mechanics currently being developed (mining, salvage, etc). The assets involved are all AAA quality. The biggest issue I see is being able to deliver on AI NPCs for first-person combat.

Your position seems reasonable to me. However, I still think you are overly optimistic about what the game can be. You might be right. I hope you are. Because if you are, it will be a great game to play. But until I see it, finished, released, reviewed -- until then RSI has already used up their "benefit of doubt".
