Star Citizen Squadron 42 CitizenCon Trailer

Mark Hamill tweets and Henry Cavill Instagrams about their participation in a new Squadron 42 - CitizenCon Trailer which offers the latest look at one of the upcoming crowdfunded Star Citizen games. This came out of yesterday's CitizenCon 2948 festival, and this page has more details from that. It seems even the voice actors are feeling a little of the heat from the game's long development cycle, as Hamill asks the following, presumably rhetorical, question: "Do you want it NOW or do you want it AWESOME?" The description of the clip is quite short: "Join the brave men and women of the 2nd Fleet as they stand strong against the greatest threats the UEE has ever faced. Will you answer the call?"

Backed for $115 for the Origin 325A and SQ42. Did it primarily because of Derek Smart's spiteful nature towards the project and secondarily because I have a computer now capable of playing it relatively smoothly in 4K. I thought even he would be impressed by this trailer's tech and progress. Instead, what I see is a person hell-bent on bringing it down no matter what. I don't trust Chris, and I continue to have my doubts. However, I do want to see the project launch, and I'm not so rigid that I refuse to back it today. If the project fails, this time I'm out a hundred bucks and ONLY that much.

Unfortunately, EA said no to Chris when he asked for the WC license. That's why he went with Star Citizen / SQ42.

Do you have source if possible? At the very least he could have pushed the issue once they got the big bucks early on. I am sure EA would come to terms eventually, not like EA doing much with it anyways.

Have no intention of playing the MMO though. I was only looking for a modern Wing Commander game when I backed this.

SQ 42 will be finished in a year or so. The MMO will never be finished.

They said that about SQ42 two years ago. Even created a sizzling trailer with Gary Oldman giving a speech.

That's fair enough. Wing Commander was ahead of its time with the use of FMV and branching narratives, which was costly for development. Other genres provided a better return on investment. Since Star Citizen demonstrated demand for the genre we've already seen more activity than in the previous decade, with No Man's Sky, Elite: Dangerous and EVE: Valkyrie being the highest profile examples. Publishers are inherently risk averse, which is why Chris Roberts went with the crowdfunding approach.

The issue is not how long it will take but whether it will be a decent game at the end. So as long as the progress is in the right direction and CIG is responsive to the community I am happy to wait.

For me there are a few important milestones coming up - we have 3.3.5 introducing Hurston (the first planet) and Object Container Streaming (a technology to improve performance), then 3.4 (due in December) will rework the flight physics. Those need to improve the game rather than add more issues. But the main one will be server meshing, which will allow all players to exist within the same connected universe. If CIG can't deliver on that then I don't see how the game will work. That for me will make or break the game. In terms of timeframe it was on the schedule for next year but certainly it needs to be in the game within the next five years or it just isn't going to happen.

Remember, it took 5 years to develop World of Warcraft, and that was with an pretty solid (and large) team with lots of funding. Star Citizen started from kickstarter with a pretty small team, and the game is way more ambitious. Their big mistake was about changing directions a few too many times.

Yeah, in typical CR fashion, he's going for the "movie" version of Star Citizen instead of focusing on the actual gameplay.

I actually think it's pretty cool having all these stars in the game. I typically agree with you, that name stars in games are distracting, but it really works for me here.

I don't think it makes any sense at all if you look at it with a longer term perspective.
CIG take ages to develop shit so when Squadron 43 is finally going to be in development in about a decade from now then many of the older current actors like Oldman or Hamill will have passed away or they will at least not be in shape to assume their old roles (OK, I have a hunch that Oldman's role will die in Squadron 42 anyway so in his case it might be a moot point).

Other actors might be too expensive by then or meth addicts or fatties or whatever else might prevent them from starring in a sequel.

Another factor might be that Squadron 43 will need to be made on a much tighter budget so Roberts will be forced to go all digital characters or hire cheap fledgling actors.

So, while it is great to have all these actors as a one trick pony, there are huge question marks with regard to longer term viability.
It will be really awkward if a Squadron 43 is going to have a totally different, unrecognizable cast.

The problem is that the CIG fuckers are too slow. Origin cranked out the Wing Commanders within a few years so they could shoot it all with the same crew of actors for the most part but CIG won't be able to do that most likely which makes it quite questionable whether it will be fun and immersive to have these actors in the first place.

I think Squadron 42 is a pretty safe bet, in so much as CIG has already demonstrated excellent performances from the AAA cast and we already know they can handle cinematics. The gameplay also doesn't need to be as involved as Star Citizen, as it will largely be focused on combat than all the mechanics currently being developed (mining, salvage, etc). The assets involved are all AAA quality. The biggest issue I see is being able to deliver on AI NPCs for first-person combat.

Your position seems reasonable to me. However, I still think you are overly optimistic about what the game can be. You might be right. I hope you are. Because if you are, it will be a great game to play. But until I see it, finished, released, reviewed -- until then RSI has already used up their "benefit of doubt".

As for Star Citizen, I have a lot more concerns. Populating entire star systems with interesting and engaging content is going to be difficult. As will be the netcode, the multicrew gameplay, balancing, etc. CIG has proven itself capable of producing ships, armour and locations but not for producing them in a sensible timeframe. We still have yet to see a single planet in-game and even when they do later this year it's not going to be all that interesting when servers are capped to 50 players and NPCs are currently a mess.

I don't know if you've seen the CitizenCon 2018 presentation of Lorville but that's all content coming this year. It's buggy and poorly optimised but there's a decent framework there. And that's what gives me my optimism, the atmosphere and potential. Technical issues like performance, visual improvements and playercount are all addressable - they just take time. I'm happy to wait; I can understand if others aren't.
