Microsoft Buying Obsidian?

Kotaku reports rumors that Microsoft is close to buying Obsidian Entertainment, saying this comes from three individuals briefed on the situation. One of their sources says the deal is 90% finished, with another saying "it's a matter of when, not if" the deal gets done. They are told this is part of an effort by Microsoft to bolster their PC gaming bona fides. For their part, the developer's signature sense of humor is on display in their statement on this, as an Obsidian spokesperson tells them: "Unfortunately, we don’t comment on rumors or speculation other than to say that the Rumors album by Fleetwood Mac still holds up."

Sure there was. Desura was one. Stardock had one they sold to gamestop. There's been others.
Steam was a one game show until they grew up

I'm okay with the online equivalent of Walmart (Steam), Target (Origin), Sears (Uplay) and Kmart (Microsoft's online abomination) being the defacto choices for digital gaming. Only trouble is Microsoft makes cynical cash-grab shit and can't even come close to making a decent platform, Ubisoft has a hard-on for making only the same nebulous content-laden open world "live services", and Uplay at best is merely an annoyance, and EA is basically Satan in corporate form. Valve doesn't make anything but money anymore, which would be fine by me if they would use even a tiny percentage of it to get decent customer service and some kind of basic curation.

Fuck. First the promising Ninja Theory (makers of the great Senua's Sacrifice) and now this. If true, this is disheartening. I personally like and admire Obsidian, and there's no way this is a good deal for gamers who share my sentiment. While not the inevitable death sentence it would be if EA was acquiring them, in the end they may as well be dead because Microsoft will almost certainly grossly misuse them like they have been doing with the once-great Rare making garbage XBOX/Windows Store exclusives nobody wants. Microsoft's inept and flaccid gaming division can't die soon enough.

MS is doing this more for taking down another big name in gaming studios. Like EA they buy companies and run them into the ground and hold the IP in limbo forever. Either that or let the company starve and they will eventually have to close down while MS holds the IP anyway. Just another way to get people to buy from the MS store. This is the same tactic most big game companies use to squeeze play the gaming market. Lack of options will eventually force gamers to buy from only a couple of online stores. Like steam, origin and uplay. Gas companies do this also. Close down the mom and pop's and force the other riff raff to go too the main source. Whatever prices they wish to charge as well. This is another in a long list of monopoly tactics.

there are no discounts for the Windows game store.

Damn State of Decay 2 is still exp like shit.

then all the problems of getting games to work properly.

SoD2 is on their gamepass thing. I think, like Sea of Thieves, they are refraining from discounts to push people onto that service.

Worked for me! And if you have an xbox the parent account can share XBLIVE and gamepass privileges with at least one other account that I've tried, so the cross play has been getting a good work out here with Forza Horizon 4 and SoT. Recent games (At least Since Gears 4) have run really well on Windows and work cross platform flawlessly, with voice being the only thing some friends/relatives have had trouble with but that is usually fixed by joining a party.

Obsidian getting bought, working in chains for x-box exclusives, before starving to death and getting shot a short while later behind the barn. I hope the Obsidian head honchos love the $$$ from this deal enough and will get boycotted by gamers if this deal really happens.

Microsoft isn't nearly as micromanagerial as EA or some of the other publishers that could have bought Obsidian. Plus I guess they could stop panhandling to fund games.
Do you have a single fact to back that up?

Ugh, terrible news.

Microsoft has been gobbling up some decent studios as of late, hopefully they don't all get crushed into nothingness, ie. Ninja Theory et al.

Pathfinder:Kingmaker has some truly atrocious bugs, so in a way you're right, CJ, they are taking the reins from Obsidian.

Still, loving P:K, I was going to stop playing but I've been plodding along in my somewhat damaged first game, haven't run into a game ending bug yet, just a lot of annoying little ones.

Except nobody trusts MS to do that and not break everything they buy in the process. Bury the IP and ruin good studios or at least good IPs because they don't fit their console sales plan. And that's all MS "gaming" cares about in the end.

In the binary between a studio getting funding by an unpopular company and a studio shutting down due to lack of funding, real gamers always chose the latter.

Well, in that long ass RPG Codex thread where Avellone shat all over Obsidian and then some he hinted at something big coming up so this rumor is probably true.

Aside from having a massive boner for Feargus, it also kinda explains why he shat on them as excessively as he did. He likely knows they will be absorbed by Microsoft so why hold back anymore?

Or maybe he was hoping to shatter the pending deal by describing Obsidian as a shithole cesspool so Feargus, Parker & co. would not be able to cash in.

If the sellout to MS is true then Avellone must be royally pissed off as an ex-co-owner to watch his nemesis Feargus rake in the millions while he gets zilch.

It would be sort of sad if a PoE 3 (I mean, a real one w/o Windows store, MTX, consolitis and timed Xbox exclusivity) would never happen but I'll live.

With Owlcat Games (Pathfinder Kingmaker) there might be a worthy replacement for Obsidian (in terms of everything including massive bug festivities) getting into gear as we speak.
