I was simply curious about the details. Any HD can fail, so when you are storing 7 TB of data you don't want to lose things could be pretty complicated.

I keep double that backed up via FreeFileSync onto backup drives. Gonna go raid in the future though so things are a bit more automatic.

Right. That more or less matches up to what I was recalling (I was thinking Raid 1+0 as a minimum). The end result being to have a significant size (7 TB) Raid which is actually reasonably "safe" is something only a very small number of individual/retail users are going to be willing to do. And even if you spend the money to do that, you then need backups on top of it. Hence why I asked what he was doing for backups...

My understand of NAS Raids is with modern drives the failure rate is much higher than you would think. This is because modern drives have so many sectors the odds of getting a bad sector increase significantly. So, if you have a raid drive fail, recovery chances are reduced.

I'm not saying they're worthless, just that data safety not as good as you would hope.
Dell quit recommending RAID 5 years ago for reasons similar to what you mentioned.
Raid is almost foolproof if it is properly setup, monitored and maintained. here is some raid setup and info.

Remember, RAID is Not A Backup.

SO WHICH RAID is right for you? Well that depends on how much money you got and how much downtime you can afford.
Raid 6 (Drives with Double Parity) — Minimum 4 Drives
Raid 10 (Mirror+Stripe) or 0+1 (Stripe+Mirror) — Minimum 4 Drives
Raid 50 (Parity+Stripe) — Minimum 6 Drives
Raid 60 (Double Parity+Stripe) — Minimum 8 Drives

As someone who used to love and is still fascinated by conspiracy theories (yet believes exactly none of them) I find reading up on #QAnon to be delicious! That shit is awesome! There's just no way the mysterious 'Q' doesn't look like the smoking man from the X-Files.

Thank god Apple does not run Steam. Thank you, oh lord, thank you, thank you.

And I don't even believe in god and would still like to thank him for this.

HA!

That's okay, I'm sure Yahoo Answers will be thrilled with the extra traffic.

Also apparently 8chan's servers are run by the NSA and they're in on Qanon.

I just buy cds of the music I like on Amazon and make sure they have the autorip option. I download the free mp3s of the cds right away. If I lose the mp3s, I can always redownload the songs if they still have them. If not, I always have the cds.

That could be. Despite a wide range of tastes, from Ice-T to Frank Sinatra, I have only a modest collection of music, I'd guess about 300 CDs. So, if you feel the need to have 100,000 different tunes at your disposal, Spotify might be a better choice.

I have never purchased any music online. I've had people chuckle at me for still buying physical CDs. I have done this because of exactly what Apple has done with film content. I do not find their actions surprising.

I still say the only economic way to go is renting, i.e. Spotify. It's ultimately very cheap, and has nearly all the advantages of buying. Yes, thing sometimes disappear, sometimes for a day, sometimes for months, but you have access to tens of millions of tracks. You can save 10,000 on each device for offline listening. And you don't need to deal with physically storing a ton of CDs.

Obviously everyone has different needs for use, but I'd argue Spotify is the best for the most.
