Star Citizen Scraps CitizenCon Keynote Stream Fee

Star Citizen backers are generally pretty understanding about Cloud Imperium Gaming's ongoing crowdfunding efforts, and many of them own hundreds or thousands of dollars worth of virtual ships for CIG's upcoming space game(s). An effort to raise more funds for CitizenCon has met with outrage, however, as fans balked at an effort to charge to watch a livestream of the keynote for the convention. After considerable backlash on Reddit, the developer has relented and made the stream free once again (thanks theyarecomingforyou). Chris Roberts' post about all this outlines initial reasoning that sounds similar to what's happened with development of the game itself, saying more money was sought because the scope of the convention has expanded beyond their initial plans:
This year's CitizenCon is much bigger than last years, with two separate stages and tracks. We did this because we felt the format we tested last year was a success and because of this we wanted to expand it to allow more people to attend and provide more opportunities to hear from and interact with the devs.

With a venue and planned attendance three times the CitizenCon in Frankfurt, with more panels (so more devs needing to travel) , more food and drink options for everyone the proposed budget for this year's CitizenCon was almost double last years. And this was without any video coverage, let alone streaming of the second stage, and a plan to just stream the opening keynote from the main stage.

Yes, you read that right, the original plan didn't have any plan for streaming anything beyond the opening keynote. There was not even video archiving of the second stage due the additional costs of getting a second video crew for that stage. Even then there was some debate as to whether it was truly worth it to spend a chunk of change to stream the opening keynote for 90 minutes when we're always in a foot race to compress it as a high-quality video and post to YouTube as quickly as possible after the demo so people can enjoy a HD Video as opposed to a crappy re-post of a Twitch Stream.

The saddest part of their lame-ass attempt to extort money from fucktards is the fantards who defended this like "but... but... but... Blizztard is doing it, too!!!!".

Look, I'm no fan of Blizztard at all and I'd never in my whole life pay money for a fucking stream of a marketing event so they can shower me with advertising on their upcoming games (meaning they should pay ME for watching and not the other way around) BUT Blizztard has over two decades of AAA development under their belt.

They have released dozens (including expansions) of commercially successful AAA products.
Blizzcon is usually about several games, several franchises, they bring on "celebrities" and it's a pretty huge frickin' event.

CIG trying to charge for a stream covering their piss-poor, buggy, crowdfunded early access alpha SHITSHOW is incredibly bold. Who the FUCK do they think they are???

Their track record is as shitty as it gets with six years of development and FUCK ALL to show for it.
Their releases track record is a flatline. Zero. They have no upcoming games/franchises other than SC. They are as insignificant as a fart of a fly in a hurricane.

And to top it all off, everyone who has ever watched one of their streams... HOLY SHIT... how dare they even think about charging for watching these MORONS scrambling around the stage, fucking up every demo and acting like a bunch of chicken with their dumbass heads chopped off?!?!?

Un-fucking-believable... their shows have always been so amateurish and embarrassing that it was physically painful to watch these fuckclowns making complete fools of themselves.

Finally, this was another big FUCK YOU they sent out to their original backers. We were promised a different approach than the big publishers. We were promised transparency, no greed, fair treatment, blahbluhblehblah... and then they try to pull off shit like this.
Another one in a series of hundreds of broken promises.

And no one asked for Citizencon to be turned into a full retard show. Chris likes to hide behind that excuse for the full retard feature creep of the game (like "not my fault, the fans forced me to cuz of the fideliteh and immershun!") but that shit does not fly for the fucking annual marketing event. What a bunch of assholes...
