Divinity: Original Sin 2 - Definitive Edition Launches

Divinity: Original Sin 2 is no more, as it is now officially supplanted by the Divinity: Original Sin 2 - Definitive Edition, a major update to Larian Studios' Windows role-playing game. This can be found on GOG.com or Steam, and owners of the original second Original Sin will find they have been upgraded to the new version automatically for free. The post on GOG.com has a launch trailer along with details on what makes the new edition so divinely definitive, which includes some free DLC:
The amount of additions and improvements that it brings is nothing short of staggering, so here's a list which almost does them justice:

  • A new Story Mode option for those who don't like spending too much time with combat considerations while enjoying the world and atmosphere. You can alternate between modes at any point.
  • New and reworked fights!
  • Tutorial expanded to work players through the gameplay specifics more smoothly.
  • Tons of new lines recorded for this Edition.
  • Significant performance optimization.
  • UI changes, journal revamped.

Plus, a mini DLC rides forth with this update: brave brave Sir Lora, the squirrel Knight companion who's dreading the coming of the Great Acorn, will let you become his valiant defender. Previous owners of the game get this DLC for free.

Note: You will be able to choose between the Classic and Definitive Edition from the launcher when you start the game.

I think I rage uninstalled this. it was after cheesing a hard fight in a sewer and then opening a door and everyone exploded or death fogged out. Game mechanics are fun, but when you have to spend more time on Youtube learning how to progress without ruining quests, it wears thin.

Very sad that the mods don't work. I had several picked out, now I have to wait for them to (hopefully) get converted.

Dammit devs, if you proclaim to be so mod friendly, STOP FUCKING BREAKING ALL OF THEM WHEN YOU UPDATE YOUR GAME.

holy shit... those over the top review quotes...

"Better than Perfect"

"Categorically the best game in human history"

Lets not even get into how fucking stupid professional reviewers must be to use those phrases, but the fact that you then used that hyperbole in your launch trailer... you seem pretty arrogant.

If they are actual quotes, why not use them? Big publishers will just take a couple of words from a quote and make it say something else entirely.

SharpAsShitGames Reviewer says "This game is fucking garbage, and it left me with a giant pile of exactly-the-opposite-of awesome sores on my eyeballs, that seeped into my head and caused brain cancer."

EA quotes "This game is...a giant pile of... awesome that seeped into my... brain!" -SharpAsShitGames.

So hey, if a reviewer genuinely said this about your game, fucking use it.

Found this in a Reddit post
It's a separate game, but lumped together with the classic edition into a big download. If you don't plan to play the inferior classic edition, feel free to delete "Divinity Original Sin 2\Data" folder to save 32gb of space. Definite edition is only 22gb since assets were optimized.

That because the game is pretty much spot on on those comments.

Does the camera actually move dynamically around now like in the video? That'd be cool. One thing I kind disliked about the original version was the camera. You couldn't zoom out far enough, you had to constantly adjust it and you never got a good view of the world like in this video.

LOL that is what I came to post on, the engine has been a 3d engine, I've asked for them to unlock the camera, allow us to pick and angle lock that and then add driving control WASD, because it would be a cool alternative view/play through like that. So what do they do? They have a trailer that shows this angle ('cause obviously they like it and it sells the game) but they won't give us those controls in game. Frustrating.

Yea, well. You wont like it this time either. All the mods for the Classic version only work for the classic version. A whole new batch will need to be updated to work for the new version.

But, at least the classic ones are not broken for the classic version. Thats the plus side of this.
Gtk, thanks. Yeah, last time iirc the mods could not be converted. It might have been due to them using a new engine or format. All I know (think I know) most if not all the mods from Divinity Original Sin still don't work in DOS EE. If the mods can be converted for DOS II EE, that would be a huge improvement Lighter

Funny thing is I finally bought this game last night having no idea that it was the new edition. I was confused at first why my saves from original and def were different..
Is there any reason for me to play original at all at this point?

I don't think so. There might be some new bugs but I'd guess they'll still be offering support and updates but only to the new edition.

Nice, I'll start my second playthrough with this version relativley soon, burning through some other games right now though.

MeanJim -> thanks for that, I'll make sure to save the SSD space by getting rid of the classic version when I do play it again.

Yes, and you can also link a shortcut directly to the DE executable in the DE directory, bypassing the launcher, as well, if you want.

I will probably just move my original version to another drive so that if the mood hits me to continue the original game someday I can easily do it.
It is well known universally that I do not make mistakes--so, if you should happen across an error in that which I have written, please be assured that *I* did not write it!...:)

I don't understand why they didn't make them separate games like they did for D:OS and D:OS EE. The two editions don't share assets, people on the forums already figured out you can delete everything but the DefEd directory, so there's no need to have to download and install both versions no matter which one you plan to play.
