Subnautica: Below Zero Revealed

Unknown Worlds reveals Subnautica: Below Zero, a stand-alone expansion to Subnautica that will launch into Steam Early Access in the coming months. This preliminary news doesn't include too many details, but a new website is online with what they are revealing for now. They also head off concerns that this will distract from the process of porting Subnautica to consoles, saying the expansion is being handled by a different team. Here's early word:
Unknown Worlds is building a stand-alone expansion to Subnautica, called Subnautica Below Zero. Set in an ice-bound region of planet 4546B, after the events of the original game, Below Zero will offer a new chapter in the Subnautica universe. We would like to show you some of Below Zero's concepts, and share our plans for release.

In the coming months, we will release an unfinished, early version of Below Zero in Early Access. We will then begin releasing consistent content updates, carefully crafting the game based on your feedback - Just like the original Subnautica.

The concept of Below Zero is still developing. We are keeping the core gameplay mechanics, such as base building and open-ended exploration. We are also exploring new ones, such as thermal management, and more voiced dialogue at the core of the plot. We're still in early stages and nothing is set in ice. These features may change prior to, and during, Early Access.

All games need a co-op OPTION.

I can't remember the last single player game i finished...maybe GTA SA? All games are better with mates.

Perhaps, but there are single player games that were absolutely ruined by coop. I loved Orcs Must Die. For the second game, they added coop and the game was terrible as a single-player experience. The maps were too large, you spent to much time running. It was obviously tuned for 2 people, and was not remotely as fun as the first game.

How do you know it was solely due to co-op? Similar thing happened to Dungeon defenders but it had co-op in both.

Sometimes dev's are just stupid.

Oh that brings back terrible memories. I LOVED the first Orcs Must Die, and like you said, the second one was just god-awful.

I've had this on my radar for a while now. Hopefully they'll make a complete edition, so I can get both at once.

I hope they make it coop this time (like they promised with the first game, and it never happened lol).

I was an NS1 (not so much NS2) fan from a long time ago, so I can forgive Charlie and his small team. But now that they've made a gazillion dollaz with Subnautica, I expect to see some COOP

This is a must buy for me. I'm about to start my fourth play-through. The first was stopped by an unfinished game during early access, the 2nd was completed and on my 3rd I got my ass kicked from behind by an angry Ghost leviathan while repairing my Cyclops 500 meters down, with over 25 hours on the game clock, "hardcore" difficulty. Ooops, I perma-died after 25 hours of resource gathering, vehicle and base building.
I can't get bored of this game somehow...

I played around with Subnautica during it's EA phase and I liked it but I wanted to wait until the game was finished (and the story) to actually make a real go at it. Since I've seen the story and ending to The Forest and it didn't intrigue me much, I'm hoping Subnautica's story has is better and with a decent ending.

What I wouldn't give, though, for a nice remake of the ol' Microprose DOS classic, Subwar 2050! (Hell, I'd go for a remake of a lot of MPS's old DOS catalog, especially Task Force 1942!) And, while we're at it, how about a nice update to Sub Culture and Archimedean Dynasty (and by extension, Aquanox)? Yes, they're not survival crafting sims but I think I can overlook that little detail if the games live up to their predecessors...

Didn't I see recently that Aquanox is getting a sequel?

For people looking for a good single player survival game while they finish polishing this expansion up, I hear Green Hell is pretty damn good.

Having it as an option is never a bad thing. Those who dont want it, dont have to play it in co-op.

That would absolutely ruin the experience. It's like saying a psychological horror game names coop. "Hey bro, you see that crazy monster? Jumped out right at us, bro!" "Yeah, man, I'd be scared, except you're here with me!"

You don't have to play it in coop. I play Ark and there's a map with large oceans and it works damn well in coop.

This is how I feel. I never really knew much about Subnautica until I got vr last year and then I just added it to my backlog of games. Then a month ago I finally started playing it in vr and it became of my favorite gaming experiences ever. I don't see how I can resist the early access now.

Haven't visited the site, but I hope that they're going to step up their VR integration as well. Subnautica was fantastic because of the detail in the environment. The physics, sounds, flora and fauna were vibrant and brought a deep feeling to the gameplay.

....not sure they can recreate that on an ice world, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

I went EA on the game and I love it. However, given how long it took them to deliver it I certainly won't be going EA on this though I'll most likely pick it up when it's done.
