Chasm Opens Up

Now's your chance to fall into Chasm, as Steam News announces that this procedurally-generated adventure/platformer is now available on Steam for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Here's the launch trailer, and here's word on how deep the rabbit hole goes:
Welcome to Chasm, an action-adventure game in which you play a new recruit undertaking your first mission for the Guildean Kingdom. Thrilled to prove your worth as a knight, you track strange rumors that a mine vital to the Kingdom has been shut down. But what you discover in the mining town is worse than you imagined: The townspeople have disappeared, kidnapped by supernatural creatures emerging from the depths.

Honor-bound to solve the mystery and restore peace to the Kingdom, you embark upon an epic adventure, with deadly battles against cunning monsters, exploration of ancient catacombs and castles, and powerful new equipment hidden at every turn. Though the overall story is the same for all players, your hero's journey will be unique: each of the rooms has been hand-designed, and behind the scenes Chasm stitches these rooms together into a one-of-a-kind world map that will be your own.

Key Features

  • Explore six massive procedurally-assembled areas from hand-crafted rooms
  • Enjoy challenging retro gameplay and authentic pixel art (384x216 native res.)
  • Battle massive bosses and discover new abilities to reach previously inaccessible areas
  • Customize your character by equipping armor, weapons, and spells
  • Windows, Mac, & Linux versions with full Gamepad support

I know some people like this kind of stuff, but man, I feel like we are stepping backwards in time with all these side scrolling games. Just not my thing.

There are just so many games that anything you don't like, there will seemingly be an ocean of them. I thinks it's great they are making these game, there are people out there that love them. I like them, but not great at them, but I don't like them more than other offerings. If there were only 5 games released a year, I'd play the shit out of this.

Looks like a fun Castlevania style game to me... Not sure what ya'll's definition of retro is, but this doesn't fit mine... Some of those scenes are beautiful.

Sooo... ya... Got home and watched the vid again, and nevermind... That's pretty 'retro' pixel art...

I get annoyed at most deliberately retro graphics based games, but this looks halfway decent, but refresh my memory, was this one of the Kickstarted games that took like 6 years to make? I've lost track of them all.

Yeah, I backed it in 2013. You can tell it's been in the works a while because they promised a Vita port, lol, which they're giving away for free to any backers who want it. I'd much rather have it on Switch, and I gotta think they're working on that now, but I doubt I'll buy it twice. Played a couple hours last night and it's good, though, very pretty with tough but fair platforming and combat.

If I can't cut off arms with circular saw blades I'm not playing. Pfft, "Chasm."

Anyway, Darks, people here frequently post that misleading image trying to show that FPS level design in the 1990s was superior to now. I think lots of people want a more simple game sometimes. And there's a lot of depth and cool mechanics you can add to a platformer now that you couldn't back then.

When I first saw this, that was the Chasm that came to mind. Played the hell out of it back in the day. Wonder if it's on GOG?
And it runs like shit on DOSBox. But people is getting there:

I love retro graphics, I think there's not enough good sidescrollers and I think that old first person level design is better in general than in modern games.

Edit: and about this game, I'm interested, but reviews seem to say that it's a bit better than mediocre, so I'm not going to run and buy it.

Nope. I doubt it aged well, and think it's kind of totally lost. None of the entities responsible are around, making it tough (but not impossible.)
